I actually saw Alex Chilton play in a bar almost 20 years ago. Maybe 30 people there, if that. And, frankly, he looked and sounded like hell. He was supposedly recovered from heroin addiction at the time, but he sure didn't look like it. I hadn't heard Big Star at that point, it was more the Replacements' song that inspired me to go ($5 cover charge didn't hurt) and I really wasn't impressed. I've since listened to Big Star and now I get it. And the photos I've seen of Chilton indicate he really did clean up, he looked much better. They were supposed to reunite at SXSW Saturday, it's too bad.
