The Last Waltz, Coinkydink

So last night I watched The Last Waltz for the first time. If you're familiar with the Band, you know they spent a lot of time in Woodstock, New York (the town, not the farm) and the late Levon Helm stayed there permanently, eventually starting the 'midnight ramble' concerts on Saturday nights in his barn.

Today a client called, but the boss was on the phone so I started taking a message. I'd always thought he was in Arizona, but it had been mentioned that he was in New York, so I asked. He said he was in Woodstock, NY. For the heck of it, I asked if he'd ever been to a midnight ramble. There was a silence, then 'you know what that is? I've been 3 times.' I explained I'd just seen The Last Waltz and he said the rambles were like that, except smaller in scale. But it's quite a coincidence, I must say.

The Last Waltz

Watching it right now, for the first time. I had no idea that the Palladia Channel existed, probably because it's HD only and I don't generally search those channels, but go directly to the one I want. (It's the SD stations where I mosey along.) Looks like some cool stuff, although being HD only I'll have to take care not to overload the DVR.

Anyway, they ran The Last Waltz a few times recently in honor of Levon Helm and I was able to record it. Wow, the 70s. But damn they could play. Digging this mightily.

A Day of Musical Death

So, Dick Clark passed yesterday.

Levon Helms passed today.

And most stunningly to raised-on-MTV-videos me, Men At Work's Greg Ham was found dead today.

I was flat-out obsessed with Men At Work in the day, saw them play live 3-4 times (including my first ever concert), owned everything, on and on. And I had a huge crush on Greg Ham for several years.

Not a good day for music.

Thoughts On The Band (The Band, not any band)

Word is that Levon Helm will not be with us much longer. Which will be a huge loss to fans of The Band, but less sadly, the news is of great inspiration to Charles Pierce.
