RIP Jonathan Hardy

http://www.examiner.com/article/jonathan-hardy-of-farscape-dies-at-71

I am quite sad (and a little creeped out.) Sunday, I was puttering about in the basement, saw a Farscape magazine and my first thought was, Jonathan Hardy. Does he still wear the t-shirt I gave him at Comic-Con? (I've seen many photos of him at other cons in the shirt.) How is he doing, health-wise? He hasn't always been well. Is he working on anything?

Monday, the news came out that Jonathan had died. So I'm bit creeped that I was thinking about him, for the first time in while, right around the same time he died. Meep.

I saw Jonathan at several cons in the early-mid part of the oughts. He was a hoot and a half, a great con guest and a fan of me (!) He loved my artwork, esp. that of Rygel, and I gave him both a t-shirt and a print of that piece. He gave me his personal e-mail address, his idea, because he wanted to keep in touch. I wimped out. What would I say? And now I'm doubly sorry I wimped.

A glass to you, sir, a fine voice (literally) and great personality.

On Seeing Blade Runner For the First Time

It's not done yet, probably 2/3rds done right now, but I have a few thoughts. Firstly, I'm seeing a lot of Firefly here. Clearly Joss Whedon saw this movie more than a few times. Speaking of people who've clearly seen it, Farscape's Chiana seems clearly based on Pris. Harrison Ford is more appealing to me here than in pretty much anything else I've seen him in. I can't imagine how expensive this film must have been in '82 dollars. And it's a pretty slow movie. That's the big objection I'm having, is the slow pace. It's put Mom to sleep, although it's impressive she's even tried it.

Writer's Block: Love to hate

[Error: unknown template qotd]
Back in their respective heydays, I was a big fan of Scorpius (Farscape) and Luther Mahoney (Homicide: Life on the Streets). In both cases you had a villain who was amoral and determined to bring down our heroes; but then they'd turn around and help, or do something good for someone else. They did the right thing just enough to make you wonder what they'd do next. More recently, I think Ben Linus (Lost) falls into this category.

For pure sociopathic delight, Alice (Luther) is tops these days.

Happy Fan-person

The disaster that was Mike's Wii game (and me buying him the Flaming Lips' version of 'Dark Side of the Moon', which it turns out he already had) aside, we did pretty well this Christmas, esp from a fan standpoint. I landed the complete Farscape series, and season 2 of both 'Life' and 'Pushing Daisies'. Plus, of course, Dominion: Intrigue and Dominion: Seaside. Seaside arrived rather beat up, and that's how my poor little brain feels after reviewing the cards. Some of them are almost bizarrely complicated and I don't understand them at all at this point. I'll probably have to pick brains at Alphabet Soup or Farpoint to figure them out. Jack wanted to play them last night, but it was late so I've put him off until today, when we go to their house. There will be much Dominion today...

Mom also pulled in a haul. I got her an under-cabinet radio/CD player, which also has an MP3 input and a cooking timer. Mike installed it last night. He also installed the TV/DVD player he got her for the kitchen, which has a digital tuner so we finally have TV in the kitchen again. And the DVD player is built-in, so hopefully she only has to navigate the open/close button. I also got her a portable CD/cassette/radio box, which also has an MP3 input, so she can listen to anything anywhere. Last but not least, I got her the first 3 seasons of the Mary Tyler Moore Show and the first season of The Rockford Files, so she's in her own version of geek heaven now.

Back to sleep, so I can survive Christmas-crazed nephews...

Farscape!

My Farscape collection presently consists of Season 1. That's it. And it cost me almost $100, which is why I never bought the others, just too ridiculously expensive.

Well, found the new, re-issued set on Amazon last night. The entire series, all four seasons. For $58. I'm not kidding. Complete Farscape on Amazon ) Mom did get it for me for Christmas (yay!) but if you don't have the show, I strongly recommend hustling over to Amazon, post-haste.
