I tuned up for the football game by going to the horse expo. I'm diverse like that. Mom managed to lose her ticket in the 12 feet between me giving it to her and approaching the ticket taker. Otherwise she wasn't too bad out there. After a great deal of prodding, I was able to get her to buy a present for my sister-in-law (Mom and I don't wear jewelry, but Janine does), a multi-colored fused glass pendant. There was a pen & ink artist there whose work is fabulous, so we bought a print of a horse standing in a creek, I'll mat & frame it sometime this week. Gorgeous piece. A horse trainer was showing how to introduce horses to unfamiliar situations by teaching a beautiful palomino to kick a giant soccer ball. Really. But mostly it was about visiting with the horses and ponies on exhibit. Some of them had had enough for the weekend and were sulking; but some were still interested and some - especially the draft horses from Gentle Giants rescue - were really enjoying the attention. It was hard to get good pics, but I got a couple.

Up Close This rescue horse seemed to be in the dumps. But he held still, darn it.
Patience A Shire available for adoption, this big fella (his feet were nearly a foot in diameter) was loving the attention and demanding treats. But when he was given a strawberry - ptooey, said he.

Last but not least, a Norwegian Fjord horse. They are considered draft horses, but often and in this case are pony-sized. He also had an awesome haircut - his mane stood straight up and had three rows of different color hair. And he was friendly as heck, he couldn't visit with and sneeze upon everyone fast enough. I have a new favorite breed.

http://www.examiner.com/article/jonathan-hardy-of-farscape-dies-at-71

I am quite sad (and a little creeped out.) Sunday, I was puttering about in the basement, saw a Farscape magazine and my first thought was, Jonathan Hardy. Does he still wear the t-shirt I gave him at Comic-Con? (I've seen many photos of him at other cons in the shirt.) How is he doing, health-wise? He hasn't always been well. Is he working on anything?

Monday, the news came out that Jonathan had died. So I'm bit creeped that I was thinking about him, for the first time in while, right around the same time he died. Meep.

I saw Jonathan at several cons in the early-mid part of the oughts. He was a hoot and a half, a great con guest and a fan of me (!) He loved my artwork, esp. that of Rygel, and I gave him both a t-shirt and a print of that piece. He gave me his personal e-mail address, his idea, because he wanted to keep in touch. I wimped out. What would I say? And now I'm doubly sorry I wimped.

A glass to you, sir, a fine voice (literally) and great personality.

Going back to yesterday's Q of the Day about languages...

I took advantage of Borders' demise and picked up some Spanish dictionaries and grammar guides today. (Also got an atlas, some art & design books and a Kane CD, but mostly, things I are still over my price limits.) I'm hoping to start the veterinary assistant program at the local community college in September, they just released the schedule for fall. The plan is to have a professional certificate in progress and the Spanish up to conversational this fall, so if the job goes ker-plooey I have extra skills available.

Specifically,

Today I:
  • finally finished sorting and putting away my papers
  • carried 4 crates of stuff upstairs
  • stripped and remade the bed
  • did 2 loads of laundry
  • broke down CJ's old crate
  • set up her new crate
  • renewed her license
  • took CDs back to the library
  • burned DVDs
  • sorted and put away already done DVDs
  • repaired a painting on the wall that had slipped its frame
  • did the grocery shopping (did you know they make banana soda?)
  • finally watched a movie on the DVR (even as I added 2 more, of course)
For the record, the movie was 'The Lovely Bones', so now I know what Peter Jackson & Richard Taylor think the afterlife looks like. Creative fellows, they are. Also, my hand, my shoulder and my back are killing me. I hate to think what I'll feel like tomorrow.

Nope, the only game that was played that I could theoretically have been in, started while I was at the Dr Who panel. Ironically enough I bailed early on said panel, because the panel was sharing a temporary wall with what appeared to be a child care facility. The kids were pounding on the wall, banging it into me; and we won't get started on the noise. I couldn't hear the moderators. After half an hour of that I couldn't take it anymore, and went to Tahmoh's panel. He has a nice voice. Very soothing. I needed that right then.

Otherwise, just panels, meeting Tahmoh (nice fellow) and chatting. Not a lot going on tomorrow either. I have some bids on art/charity items and a couple of my pieces have minimum bids on them, so I'll be back for at least a bit tomorrow.

After an hour of scraping/shovelling/clearing off ice, I took Mom to Art's funeral this morning, although we didn't stay for the actual service. We went for the 'gathering of friends' part of the program to say hi to those we knew and meet some of Janine's family that we hadn't before. That included 3 week old Elizabeth, whom her great-grandfather only met once but he did get to see her. Mostly, though, I babysat the young 'uns and did an architectural tour with them through the chapel. It was a huge, almost entirely marble chapel with detailed mosaics everywhere, both depictions and trims, and lots of stained glass, pillars, carvings, etc. Quite an awesome building from an art/design POV. The priest said it took 8 years to build it (I asked, I was curious how much it cost as well but I'm not THAT blunt) mostly during WWI. The Germans sank the first shipment of marble and they couldn't get a second until the war was over. He also told me the Baltimore Colts practiced on the grounds in the 70's. Interesting place. Meanwhile, Mom was even less interested in attending a 90 minute mass/service than I was, so we left when it started. And off to work with me.

I meant to post this back in May, when it originally aired on CBS Sunday Morning; it was rerun this morning, which reminded me to post it now. (The text is available at CBS's site, but as best as I can tell the video isn't there anymore.) Mark Fuller does amazing things with water, especially the 'straight line' water. Incredible stuff.

So I figured I should give you a quick rundown on who you're dealing with :)

Female, 40(!) and in Baltimore, Maryland, USA (for my new UK friends, I'm about an hour's drive northeast of Washington DC). I'm a klutz who keeps breaking bones and tearing ligaments, and presently I'm finishing up therapy for a shoulder injury. I'm an administrative assistant for a very laid-back debt collection law firm (we wear shorts, bring our dogs and get paid very little), and I live with my mother, who needs someone looking after her as she has Alzheimer's and is steadily declining. Her older brother had a serious stroke in March and will never leave the nursing home, so this isn't helping her state of mind. I also have two cute, awesome nephews who I don't get to see much unless their father wants free babysitting. Our other residents are my mother's dog, Roxie, a beagle mix and my mutt, CJ, who both the love of my life and on occasion the bane of my existence. They're both lovely dogs, but they hate each other's guts. So half my home time is devoted to keeping the dogs away from each other. Spiffy. Roxie on the left, CJ on the right.

I am, at least nominally, an artist/crafter and make some extra money from it, but between stress, the economy and a very arthritic drawing hand, I've done very little art in the past year. I have a web site with most of my art on it, but the web host changed their interface last year and I absolutely cannot figure it out, hence it hasn't been updated in over a year. I love dogs, the Baltimore Ravens, good television and playing board games. I worship the ground Joss Whedon walks on and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are the alltime best films on this Earth, but after that there's no knowing where my taste might run. My musical tastes are all over the board, I can't stand gangsta rap or really over-commericalized gunk but I'll at least try just about anything else. If the radio is on, it's on local public station WTMD, whose tastes largely match mine. Unless I'm listening to NPR, whose politics largely match mine. I gladly voted for Obama and I'd do it again, though I'd prefer him left of centrist pragmatism instead of right of it.

That should cover the important stuff. Proceed at your own risk :)

I've been more than a little depressed this week. I absolutely cannot get rid of the cough aspect of the con crud. I can't get a decent night's sleep to save my life. My mother is disintegrating rapidly, won't do anything without either 10 nagging reminders or me giving up and doing it myself, and meanwhile she likes to tell people I refuse to help her with anything. I haven't drawn anything since February and I don't see it happening soon because my right hand is excruciatingly painful. And as it's my dominant hand, not doing art is the least of my problems. (It's rather ridiculous when you have to bring 2 liter bottles of soda to work so someone else can open it for you.) And I'm way behind on a lot of basic, everyday things, like filing paperwork, cleaning the car, giving the dog a bath, etc.

Oh yeah, seeing stuff like this isn't exactly helping either:

'scuse me while I go mope.

More adventures in art shows, although this time it's more the buyers than the artists (aside from the guy who sent his art to the hotel instead of the art show). But we've had buyers taking photos with their cell phones, and a lot of quick sale adventures. Mostly people seem to think they can personally write 'quick sale' on something and it's theirs. Even if there's already bids on it. Even when the signs specify you must bring it to a staff member. We're counting them as regular bids for now.

Meanwhile, I hit the dealers room and landed a copy of Ticket To Ride: Nordic Countries, which is out of print and going for outrageous prices on Ebay. I got it for MSRP, no tax or shipping :) Happy me! And a stuffed squirrel, he's quite cute. Obviously my netbook works in the art show, which had been a concern. Speaking of concerns, had an interesting conversation with the conchair of Shore Leave. ([info]jslinder I'll e-mail you.) Back to it...

The neighborhood where my office is located used to be the summer home area for Baltimore's bluebloods, and a result there are a lot of late 1800/early 1900 mansions here. One of them, at the top of the hill from the office perhaps 1/4 mile away, just went on the market Friday. I happened to see it was open this afternoon, so I had Mom stop by the office and I took a 'lunch' up there.

Holy. Mackerel. It's gigantic. 3 floors plus a full basement. Huge front lawn, more than twice the size of what you can see in the main photo. Equally large, terraced and flagstoned back yard. Garage, shed, outdoor kitchen and smokehouse. Two of the bathrooms are bigger than my bedroom. Two wraparound porches, one open and the other enclosed and including the kitchen and breakfast room. The furniture was really wonderful - mostly driftwoods converted in creative ways and simply beautiful. A lot of artwork in there, too, rather a weird combo of classic and kitsch, but there was what appeared to be an original Renoir in the dining room. (If it's original, a $six figure drawing.) A serious home for entertaining, were it not for one little problem - there's parking for only 3 or 4 vehicles. Oops.

The real estate listing photos are here. )

See if you can guess the asking price from the photos. No peeking at the listing proper.

Specifically, the last weekend?

Every year, Maryland's biggest dog show is at the Fairgrounds that weekend.
Every year, Frederick, Bowie & Delmarva are all home that weekend.
There are usually 3 conventions I'd like to go to that weekend (2 this year).
Plaza's 'Celebration of Color' (aka free art stuff!) is always that weekend.
And Jeff's birthday is that weekend.

So, no baseball that weekend, and once I finally work out the balance between art, games & dogs, the whole cart may be upset by a birthday event. Spiffy.

Home now, and probably not leaving the house again until Monday, maybe not until Tuesday! Present forecast is for 22-28 inches of snow today and tomorrow. 28 inches is the record for the area. We have plenty of food, ice melt, shovels and brooms. Time to cocoon.

The office was closing early, and the boss had me come in at 8 instead of 9 with the intent of sending me home even earlier, as I'm the lone non-4-wheel driver. So I'm half asleep. Hopefully getting a few things done on the computer re artwork for Farpoint before I doze off.

Supernatural was booted last night by a basketball game. Basketball, booooo! Want show!
gonzai: (Yikes)
I just looked at the calendar and realized...it's exactly one month until Farpoint. And I have done no art. Not since before Shore Leave, in fact. Nothin'. Nada. Uh oh. Must...try...to...make...something...new...And do it with an achy-breaky hand. Time crunch!
gonzai: (McGeek)
Sometime in the next day or so, the firm is changing its name. And the bosses think we might as well change everything else while they're at. Therefore, I have been given free rein to create a variety of new letterhead and business card designs.

This is my idea of what to do at work all day - pick and choose colors, fonts, layouts and lines. (We have no logo.) Aah, creative bliss...

I'm still here. I swept off the porch 2 hours ago, and there was almost a foot of snow on it. I swept 6 inches off it this morning. It's up to CJ's back, which has her rather confused, she's never seen more than a couple inches before. Probably 20 inches now, which is by far the most we've had since the infamous 'Snowpoint' blizzard.

Besides the sweeping, managed to get the tree out and up, burned a promo CD for a cafe which might be willing to display my art, watched 'Enchanted' (cute), both eps of 'Dollhouse' (dark) and cleaned up the computer a bit. Plenty more to do in that respect, plenty to watch, etc but I'll settle for getting some stuff wrapped tonight.

Found a website with the photographs of Marcin Sacha. They're amazing. Just flooring. I'm especially fond of 13, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, 28 & 32. Just amazing.

A section of transcript from a federal Court of Appeals case, Farrell v. Burke:

MR. NATHANSON: Are you saying, for example, that that condition of parole would prohibit Mr. Farrell from possessing, say, Playboy magazine?

P.O. BURKE: Yes.

MR. NATHANSON: Are you saying that that condition of parole would prohibit Mr. Farrell from possessing a photograph of Michelangelo['s] David?

P.O. BURKE: What is that?

MR. NATHANSON: Are you familiar with that sculpture?

P.O. BURKE: No.

MR. NATHANSON: If I tell you it's a large sculpture of a nude youth with his genitals exposed and visible, does that help to refresh your memory of what that is?

P.O. BURKE: If he possessed that, yes, he would be locked up for that.

I'm not on parole, but I do have a photo of David tacked to my corkboard at home. I guess I better watch my step. Although it's also rather frightening that the guy doesn't even know what David is.
