Home from Game Days now. I skipped all of the demos and tournaments, somehow, and the only things I bought from the vendor were my pre-orders. But I picked up an assortment of card games in the used game sale, and learned 4 new games. One was a kids game, which I would reserve for playing with kids. The others were more complicated, but I'd be willing to play them again. There are other new games I'd like to try, but most of the folks I play with aren't really into a) new games; b) expansions to games we do play; c) card/abstract games that don't take long; and d) super long games. I'm not crazy about the d) group, but I'm willing on the first 3. One of these days...

Oh, and Pass the Dice? That's the name of a horse that placed in a stakes race on the Derby undercard. Must be owned by a gamer.

Congress of Gamers, that is. I finally gave up and bought an advance, full weekend pass to it...then decided I couldn't afford to stay over until Sunday, and I'm so tired and hurting that frankly I don't know that going tomorrow is a good idea. But I paid for the whole thing. And I haven't gamed in a few weeks. I guess I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow morning. Definitely not staying until Sunday, though. Need the sleep and the football.

Oh, and the efforts on CJ's crate. She has figured out how to access things from the sides of the crate and went after my clothes :P so for the second time in as many months, I had Home Depot employees working with me on how to keep her in the damn crate. I've now spent almost as much reinforcing the crate as I did on the crate in the first place. (I did try to find contact info for the crate manufacturer, so I could tell them, oh, by the way, my dog got out of your escape-proof crate, but apparently they don't exist, at least not on the web.) Upon completion of this post, I'm going to try to reinforce at least one side of the crate tonight, so she doesn't do too much damage tomorrow if I'm gone, and I'll reinforce the other side and clean up the mess she's made inside of it on Sunday.

This dog is aging me, I swear.

http://www.examiner.com/article/jonathan-hardy-of-farscape-dies-at-71

I am quite sad (and a little creeped out.) Sunday, I was puttering about in the basement, saw a Farscape magazine and my first thought was, Jonathan Hardy. Does he still wear the t-shirt I gave him at Comic-Con? (I've seen many photos of him at other cons in the shirt.) How is he doing, health-wise? He hasn't always been well. Is he working on anything?

Monday, the news came out that Jonathan had died. So I'm bit creeped that I was thinking about him, for the first time in while, right around the same time he died. Meep.

I saw Jonathan at several cons in the early-mid part of the oughts. He was a hoot and a half, a great con guest and a fan of me (!) He loved my artwork, esp. that of Rygel, and I gave him both a t-shirt and a print of that piece. He gave me his personal e-mail address, his idea, because he wanted to keep in touch. I wimped out. What would I say? And now I'm doubly sorry I wimped.

A glass to you, sir, a fine voice (literally) and great personality.

Seriously, what is the attraction of a game that takes 12 hours to play? There were a couple games in progress when I arrived at Game Days at 10am...they were still playing the same damn games at 8pm with no sign of end. And there were dozens of games played that took 4 to 8 hours. Really, what is the attraction? I don't get it.

Just home from Game Days, which I left early because I went to the GCOM meeting that ran more than twice as long as they expected, plus I was in the world's most uncomfortable seat. My back is killing me now. Matches my knees, after I walked across a major road during rush hour to pick up my dinner. Hey, if I can see the place, I see no point in driving to it. Besides dinner, I picked up a couple goodies for myself (a GCOM t-shirt and 'Struggle for Catan'), a huge pile of games for the nephews to be divided between birthdays and Christmas, and I started the day by taking CJ to the vet, which surely wasn't cheap. So I blew bucks today. But CJ has a clean bill of health for at least a year and I'm set for all nephew-related gifts for 2012. Phew.

Back there tomorrow, hopefully for some games for me from the second-hand shop.

How about a whole lot of games?

Yep, gaming convention time. Euroquest starts tomorrow at noon, although I probably won't get there until mid-afternoon due to PT. And that's where I'll be, except for sleeping, until Sunday afternoon. So I'm not dead, just gaming.

It may have been Balticon 45, but it turned into 42 wonders for me - Saturday and Sunday, all I got to do gaming wise was play 7 Wonders 6 times. And teach it all 6 times. Got into some other games, with folks who knew how to play, on Monday. But mostly worked all weekend. We were short volunteers again and even when we had them, I was often the only one trained to use the cash register. Only one around for hanging art Friday as well, and I was the one who was stuck with both the artist having a hissy fit because he didn't like how the ASD resolved a problem with sexually explicit art and with the 'volunteer' who didn't work, did try to steal two pieces of art and then whipped up her shirt to show me her tits. Didn't work. Still made her pay. Scary stuff.

Plenty of quality time with non-scary people though, met plenty of new ones including some cool gamers, and I accidentally had dinner with Steve Geppi. Yes, the comic book distributor/museum owner/part owner of the Baltimore Orioles Steve Geppi. Might tell that story some day...

That's where I am all weekend. A four day nonstop unstructured gaming con. Finally made it there last night after a painfully slow week at work, getting ready to head out this morning. Last year, I knew only a few people there. Last night, I knew about half the people in the room. What a difference a year makes...

  • You still have money left afterwards. The more cash, the worse the con.
  • You never used your credit card or checkbook.
  • You ate healthy food voluntarily.
  • You got a good night's sleep.
  • Going back to home/work is just fine with you.
  • Your acquisitions fit in one small bag.
Feel free to add more if you think of any.

Specifically, the last weekend?

Every year, Maryland's biggest dog show is at the Fairgrounds that weekend.
Every year, Frederick, Bowie & Delmarva are all home that weekend.
There are usually 3 conventions I'd like to go to that weekend (2 this year).
Plaza's 'Celebration of Color' (aka free art stuff!) is always that weekend.
And Jeff's birthday is that weekend.

So, no baseball that weekend, and once I finally work out the balance between art, games & dogs, the whole cart may be upset by a birthday event. Spiffy.

In looking back on 2009, it seems to me to be the year I didn't do anything:

This is really depressing )

This is the depressing list I came up with off the top of my head. Obviously, there is work to be done in 2010. Hoo boy, a lot of work.
