A change in year is not helping things at all. This has been one of the worst weeks ever.

Some of it is universal; I may not be the biggest Harry Potter fan, but I did adore Alan Rickman. By Grabthar's Hammer, this sucked. And Bowie. We got cable the same month MTV debuted, so I got my fill of Ashes to Ashes, Fashion, etc., loved the 80s version of Bowie, then went back & discovered that Ziggy Stardust is one of the best records, ever, full stop. Today just heard about Ted Marchibroda, the first ever coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Enough with the death already.

On a more personal level, I hurt my heel in the car accident & it's been getting worse every day. Last week we started using a new software system at work without training or practice, & the data supplied by our client conflicted with the previous set they sent us. I wound up standing at my supervisor's computer for hours at a time while we compared databases looking for the (many errors) sent by our client. That hurt my foot even more. It took us all day Monday to finish fixing the database & printing documents. When I got home, my paycheck was in the mailbox; I usually take it to work in my pocketbook & then to the bank at lunchtime. This will be important later. Monday night, CJ flipped out around 1am, and stayed that way, barking for hours. I finally got up, and after another hour figured out the problem - battery ran low on the smoke alarm. Meanwhile I was freezing & couldn't get back to sleep. Great.

Tuesday, I arrived at work to find out that all the documents we'd printed Friday & Monday - over 2500 of them - were wrong. We had to delete some data that we didn't want on the documents; turned out the new software decided to helpfully put it back when we printed. We had to reprint every one of them. Forget going to the bank - I didn't get lunch & almost didn't get a chance to go potty all day. Meanwhile my supervisor & the third member of our office were at each other's throats all day, & it became pretty clear I was not going home at 4 for the second day in a row. After 4, I kept working on documents while my supervisor went to ask the boss some questions. When he came back, he came back with the boss, the office manager & boxes. And started packing his stuff into them. I thought he had quit. Seems there was another issue altogether I didn't know about, & combined with software issues, there was blow up & he was fired. I'm a temp, who was brought on specifically to be his assistant, so I had to ask the office manager if I should come in on Wednesday. Meanwhile, We were still printing the documents, and as a result of the firing, all of the documents needed the supervisor's name crossed out and signed by someone else. Some other workers stayed late, but the whole mess wasn't finished until after 7:30, & I didn't get home until almost 8. (I called the neighbor & asked here to feed/out the dogs.) When I got home, it was 40 degrees in my bedroom - the wind was blowing straight in & the heater couldn't keep up. So I 'slept' Tuesday night on the couch. Didn't actually sleep much & was one hurting puppy in the morning.

So Wednesday was a continuing adventure in frantically trying to print documents & deliver them to various courts, which included broken hand carts, heavy boxes, metal detectors, nosy clerks & my own failure to poker face (the clerk correctly guessed from my body language & refusal to answer questions that things were a mess, & since we'd just filed over a 1000 documents with the name crossed out...well, we handed over a lot of evidence.) Managed to eat lunch but still no time for the bank. On my way home, I discovered that the keyfob to my new car wasn't working.

Thursday was worse; the third person in our office was now the boss, as it were, & she was pissy, surly & wanted someone to yell at. Guess who. Anyway, never stopped working the entire day, no food, no bank, barely made it to the potty & then only when I snuck out when she was smoking. I nearly quit Thursday. & I got in trouble with the higher ups, because my contract with the temp agency requires that I inform them of any 'change in status' so I called them Wednesday & told them what was going on. Between the temp agency & the loose-lipped clerk, a lot of people knew about the firing, & I started to think I was going to get fired because of that.

Friday wasn't quite as bad as Thursday, but not much better. It was worse for the 'new' boss, she almost quit yesterday. And again, no lunch & no chance to go to the bank. Every bit of me hurts like heck.

Then today, I was finally going to take the check to the bank. And...it's gone. Missing. I searched everywhere, but the check isn't in my pocketbook & it isn't anywhere else either. The only place I haven't been able to look is the drawer at work where I keep my pocketbook. I'm hoping beyond hope the check fell out of the pocketbook & into the drawer at some point during the week, but if it didn't, then I'm out a paycheck indefinitely. Haven't gotten this week's check either, so the money thing is is not good. Oh yeah, the keyfob is damaged & can't be fixed without an appointment at the car dealership. Joy.

2016, you are sucking.

2015 has pretty much sucked for me, start to finish, and it's finishing with a kick. I'm still not a permanent employee. My mother doesn't know who I am any more. My new health insurance (through ACA) was cancelled by the insurer because 'I didn't pay the premium before December 1'; they conveniently left out the part where they didn't process my account or the invoice until Dec 6 and didn't contact me until Dec 10. Still haven't gotten that straightened out, and my prescriptions run out tomorrow. Great.

But the big issue is that last week, just two blocks from the office, a kid ran a stop sign at speed. I was already in the intersection & couldn't stop in time to avoid him. Fortunately he admitted liability and I didn't think I was hurt. But the next morning - apparently I jammed my feet, esp my right heel, & my feet keep getting worse. It hurts to stand, much less walk. Meanwhile, my 2007 Mazda3 was a total loss. I'd never had a mechanical issue with it, and I intended to drive it at least another 5 years - I like not having a car payment, among other things. I found myself with only a few days to find another car, with an amount of money that was a decent down payment but not enough to buy any car outright (at least, not one under 125,000 miles.) & the only car I found in that short time was more than the quickie budget I put together. So now I have a car payment again, which really peeves me. I had plenty of smaller aggravations as well, a new one every day it seems. I finished up with a 2010 Mazda3, fewer miles than the deceased car and pretty well loaded. Less storage, both less cargo space in the trunk and few spaces up front to stow things. Nice car but I'd still rather not have a payment, esp not without a permanent job.

So 2015, bite me.

Another year, another Euroquest on the books. It's the only gaming tournament I participate in, so I was there for pretty much the duration & participated in as many tournaments as I could. Skipped the wild card this time, a whopping two Can't Stop games both of which were horrid, & only a few 'Play to Win' games, I played but didn't win. Also stayed out of the side tourneys & demos. In the past 5-6 years, I made it into 5 semi-finals & 1 final. This year, I made 2 finals, qualified for 6 semis and played in 4 of them. Twice I was eligible for 2 semis that were played at the same time. Figures. Also was reduced to just 1 heat of Ticket to Ride - my strong game - by both finals being against TTR heats. My one heat of TTR (& lone heat of Castles of Burgundy, another one I'm good at) were atrociously bad. Some of the worst games I've every played of them.

Meanwhile, I learned two tourney games this year - Thurn Und Taxis, where I picked up two very close seconds, but opted for St Petersburg instead, in which I'd also landed a pair of seconds, played the semi against 3 sharks, & finished second again. They were all
convinced I was 'playing it wrong', but hey, I beat two of them. I've made semis in Settlers of Catan & Lords of Waterdeep before, but this time I graduated to the finals. I alternated terrible & great games at Settlers, meaning the great game was the semi & the terrible was the final. I wound up 4th. I never actually won a heat of Waterdeep, but did make the semis & won handily there. The final was close until the very end, when I finished 3rd. My friend Jay won the tourney. I rocked the Splendor heats, but came up one turn short in the semi. One more turn, augh. Last year I was knocked out of the Carcassonne tourney by the eventual champ; this year, I made it to the 'elite eight' before losing by 1 point. If nothing else, I seem to be getting generally better at tourney play.

The non-gaming aspects of the con...not so great. Won a game, but had no idea what any of the games were & picked something randomly. Went to the auction store & found one deal, but wasn't able to go back to bid on anything else. Couldn't afford to buy any new games. Locked my keys in the car Thursday night & had to get AAA out there. Lot of people I like to see didn't make it this year; lot of the ones that did make it weren't their usual selves this year.

Which leads to the part that the worst - one of my favorite people to play games with, Doug Hoylman, died last week. Pretty much that's all we know, he died. Doug had played nearly every game every created & he was a great & very willing teacher. He probably taught me half the games I know, even taught my nephews a couple games. A really patient & pleasant gentleman. we missed him this weekend & I'm already a bit adrift. I'm going to miss him a lot.

One thing I've definitely not kept up on: posting here. Yikes.

1 Not a damn thing. No exercise and eating terribly.  I'm eating lunch every day but that's the only improvement that's stuck.

2 No cleaning projects done, but nothing badly regressing. Meanwhile, I've collected plenty of organizing, financial and similar such apps for the Kindle, and as a result I've got life-type things organized to a goodly extent.

3 Kept up with the TV shows, and while I've only seen a few movies on the list, I've watched a lot of movies I've wanted to see. Still not where I want to be on music but I've listened to a lot of samples & previews. Slowed down a bit on books, just half of 'Feast of Crows', but caught up on a few magazines.

4 Survived the month of presents and conventions and things with my bank account in reasonable shape. I have got to get the car tuned up (one of the organizing apps is dutifully nagging me about this) and it's hard to schedule with constant medical appointments for both me and Mom. But, for a rare occasion, money is not an immediate concern.

5 Still working but the boss is getting testy again. A junior attorney clicked on a questionable e-mail and got the whole office infected with a whopper of a virus, and the boss is ticked at me instead of him. And the lack of work for me. Yippee. But Mom means another job is tricky.

I made my final car payment today. Phew.

If the car breaks down next week I will be pissed.

I didn't reallymake resolutions this year, ) ore like self guidelines. And it would probably work better if I checked in on them monthly instead of waiting for December. That said...

1. The gym. I haven't been there. Not once. I have walked at every opportunity, but that's it. Renewing this plan, because I have absolutely got to.

2. Cleaning. Kinda haven't done much of that, either. Did clean up a section of my bedroom, and this weekend the computer room is getting cleaned, period. Guests for Superbowl and Mom's bridge upcoming, it's got to be cleaned.

3. Media. Kept up with the TV, but didn't make much headway on the backlog. Kept up with the movies and saw A Clockwork Orange, Raging Bull, M, Midnight Cowboy, Forrest Gump, plus downloaded the films that are public domain. TCM will get me a long way on the plan in February, or would if I wasn't going to be home most weekends in February. The goal for music was one recording per work day, did more like half that. Note to self, maybe a variety of artists instead of a dozen by one artists would help on that. Books - DIdn't expect to get through more than one a month, considering I'm on the A Song of Ice & Fire series. Almost finished A Clash of Kings, a week early. So, acceptable but could be better.

4. Wow. Things are looking up. 1.5 car payments left now. When Mom & I were at the bank last week, the banker kept pestering me to get a credit card, which she assured was fee-free. I finally said yes, and she gave me a card - with a $10K limit. !!! The one I have is, uh, a lot less than that. Then she sent me a copy of my credit score, which I haven't seen in years. It's...about 200 points higher than I expected. Add the new card and the paid off card and yikes, I'll have a credit score to brag about. Never thought that would happen. Meanwhile, I've already done my taxes, and I'm getting a fair amount back. I thought I'd owe the State, but I'm getting some back there, too. In the mail tomorrow. So optimistic in this area.

5. So far, the year has not been particularly good or bad. My health sucks, but Mom's health seems to have levelled off. The money situation is better, but work is dicey still, with very little for me to do and money problems there. Not great, but not disastrous.

Back at the end of February...

So I'm tooling along the road, and I have to move over because a cop is writing a ticket to a guy in the right lane. I note in passing that 1) the guy has the same make/model as my previous car and 2) his car is covered with Ron Paul stickers. I continue on my way.

2 miles and 10 minutes later...same guy passes me, on the right, runs a red light so he can make a left turn, and guns it, going well over 50mph in a 35 zone. A couple minutes later, I pass him again...pulled over in the right lane getting a ticket from a different cop.

How does this guy keep his license?

CJ saw the vet today. The vet says her broken tooth has exposed pulp and signs of infection, so he's sending her to the doggie dentist. Exam, x-rays, bloodwork, consultation, anaesthesia, pain meds and if I'm lucky, just a tooth extraction. The dentist wants to do a root canal just because it's the canine tooth, but I don't think there's enough tooth left to bother. But in any event, I'm looking at hundred of dollars, the same month as car insurance and Christmas shopping. Great.

The boss came to work today in a 1967 Good Humor truck with no roof, a questionable transmission and stickers lauding Mayor Schaefer. We’re hoping to get the male members of the staff to stop playing with the truck and come back inside the office at some point today.

Haven't melted yet. Check back later today on that one. Meanwhile, my car's battery DID melt. Or rather, it was several years old and winding down its life, apparently, so the extreme heat finished it off. Right before I went to work on a day my supervisor was at a funeral and therefore I was under particular obligation to be in the office. I overpaid for a new battery, but Midas took me straight in, less than 5 minutes to confirm my diagnosis, less than 10 to replace the battery and send me on my way. It was worth it to still get to work by 10am.

It was DC Horde meetup day in Alexandria, so I saddled up and drove to Virginia. Easier said than done. They're doing 1812 stuff in Baltimore, so had to go around the long way to avoid traffic/etc in the city. Get to DC and discover oopsie! I never checked on the Nats' schedule. They're home. Day game. Crawl through the city. Found the park in Alexandria just fine, found the people, we picniced, we rambled, we petted dogs and fed ducks, we played Cards Against Humanity. I have been deemed sick and twisted (and also useful, as only I thought to bring paper towels to a picnic.) The ride back - over two freakin' hours. First I gave Carlos the Dwarf a ride back to the Metro, except not only was traffic bumper to bumper, we couldn't figure out how to get into the station. Then I tried to find a place nearby to get a cold drink, but when I left the store to return to I-95...the ramp to 95 is closed. The closing forced me back into downtown, where I wandered in gridlock before (almost accidentally) finding my way back to 95. Hooray! Not so fast, sucker. There was an accident on the Beltway just in front of the ramp. I was stuck there for a while. Finally freed and back on the highway until...BW Parkway, packed solid. At dinnertime Saturday. Uh, why? The one good thing was I listened to 3.5 CDs that have been sitting in my car for months because I never seem to get past the radio. But sheesh, 4+hours in the car today. I'm not used to that.

That's where my day has gone in the last two hours.

First, Mom calls me at work freaking out because 'the computer is broken'. It's not broken. Microsoft sent updates last night and the computer restarted, of its own accord and wanted a password before finishing the startup. A pain, but not broken. This led to 10 minutes of me, on my cell, in the office, when I'm supposed to be working, trying to explain to my mother the difference between capital letters and not capital letters because she was bound and determined to put in the password her way, not the computer's. (And now the whole office knows my personal password, so I have to change it on everything.)

On the way home, I was pulled over by a cop. That hasn't happened to me in two decades. Wondering what the hell, it seems my car's registration expired. 10 weeks ago. I never received a notice about it and with all the mishegas over my mother's car reg and the van's reg, I never noticed the Mazda was expired. I got lectured at great length about how he could tow my car, right now. He settled for me driving straight to the MVA Express...which was closed. What's the point of having an Express, with a kiosk in the lobby, if it's open even fewer hours than a real office? Anyway, now I have 24 hours to get my registration renewed. Who knows how much the late fees are, although if I have to go in I'll protest mightily since I never got a notice.

Went to the gym. Discovered my last 3 workouts never registered with the computer system. Then I couldn't get into the system to work out for the life of me. 3 machines and 2 employees later we finally got the computer to accept that I'm a member and it should record my workout. Cripes.

Come home and let CJ out - she immediately sought out Roxie's poop and started eating it. Much yelling didn't dissuade her, so I went out after her. She saw me coming and...rolled in it. That little...

Anyway, things are going to hell. See you there.

Firstly, for my new friends *waves*, the Green Monster is my old and fairly decrepit green minivan that I bought for doing arts and crafts shows.

Secondly...I'm thinking of cutting ties with the Monster. I haven't driven it in over a year, not since last year's show season, and only twice last year. With the state of my hand, my shoulder and my mother, I didn't do any shows this year and I really don't know if I'll be up for doing them next year, in which case the Monster won't be needed in 2012 either. Meanwhile the registration expires next week, and the battery is completely dead and needs replacing. So that's $250 or so just to get it on the road and legal. And another $250 a year in insurance, which is a sizeable chunk of change for me these days. For something I haven't used in over a year and best case wouldn't use until at least November, if not longer. I'm of a mind my best options are to either let it continue to sit (but I don't know if legally I can do that because of the registration, and I'd still have to pay insurance) or donate it to charity (saves me the money but I won't have a vehicle large enough for shows if/when I decide to do them again). If I go with the donation option, I have to get everything out of it (it's kinda become a rolling storage locker) and find the title to it when I haven't even wrapped gifts yet. But I have to donate it before Dec 31 to duck the registration thing. Eesh. Decisions, hard decisions...

Oy. Seems yesterday my mother tried to go grocery shopping at a store in a notoriously tricky shopping center. She couldn't find the way in. So she kept driving and driving and driving. She wound up 20 miles away from the store still looking for a place to park. Then to top it off, when she had first started the car that morning, the brake light came on. She ignored it. After driving around, racking up 40-50 miles on the car lost for an hour, she finally came to a familiar road and took it to our regular garage. The mechanic was concerned enough to tell her he couldn't fix the car today, he should drive her home. He said he was planning to hold the car until either Mike or I gave him the go ahead to return it, because he's had several customers he's had to help get off the road.

Mike and I are agreed that we don't want her driving anywhere but a half dozen or so very familiar places and otherwise she's to have me, a friend or a neighbor drive. I hope she'll take this seriously.

In my house browsing, I discovered there is a road in the area called 'Nuthatch Court'. Really. And I suppose it would be appropos if we were to live on it...

If I have amassed enough points on the quizzes and tests to pass the course, why do I still have to do a report? (Update: Grades just posted. Final tally 289/300. 100 on the report.)

While I'm on that one, why do I need to prove I've graduated high school when they're going to run a background check on me anyway? Shouldn't they find that in the check?

I'm losing my patience with GEICO. They have raised my premium $45-$60 each term the last two years, raising my overall price more than a third over what it was; I haven't had any accidents or tickets. They say it's 'cost of business in Maryland'. I think it may cost them MY business in Maryland.

The ne'er do well family across the street appears to have moved out. I vote for the house to be torn down. They've had three bad (often criminal) tenants and a lot of unattended vacancy there in the last ten years. Enough already.

Mom and I decided to try having a spa day. We went whole hog - facial, body treatment, massage, manicure & pedicure. Mom was ecstatic. I was merely pleased. And wondering if you hear the same couple of Enya songs a couple times a day, every day, do you develop a burning hatred of her? My nails are now a glittery purple and my face feels like it belongs on another person, which is an odd feeling. We dined al fresco afterwards, where Mom was floored when I not only ordered a salad, I ate the whole thing, every last leaf. (Strawberries, pine nuts and goat cheese on a big pile of arugula, with pomegranate vinaigrette. Yummy!)

Catch was that at the same time as the spa day, my car was being worked on two doors down, at a Mazda dealership for a change. The good news: they came up with a completely new reason for the 'check engine' light and it was covered under warranty. The bad news: the other two problems came with the same solution - 4 new tires. Yikes. Throw in the diagnostic fee (tires are not under warranty) and alignment and yowch! Just to round it out, they couldn't finish the car in time today, so they loaned me a Camry. Very nice car. Rides beautifully. They need my insurance card for it. Couldn't find the card. Just scan it and e-mail it to us when you get home. OK. Get home. Scanner is not plugged in to the computer or the electric. Struggle to do those things. Computer doesn't see scanner. Check. My scanner is not compatible with Windows 7 and HP has no intentions of ever making it so. Blast it. I need a new scanner on top of the tires. Spiffy, just spiffy.

When I finally got myself going, at least, I desperately needed some sleep but they're building some sort of business a block away and the bastards started hammering on the roof at 7am. Once I was movi ng, though, I went to the gym, gave CJ a bath, did grocery shopping, put away all the laundry, cleaned and dusted off my desk (for the first time in 4 years at least), searched for new software, did some cleaning of my computer drives, and took the car back to the garage because it was rattling. After a lot of test drives and tinkering the conclusion was that one of the shocks they installed last week was bad from the gitgo. They didn't have a new one in stock so the car has to come back later next week. Spiffy. At least I don't have to pay for it. Don't really need the car next week anyway with the surgery on Wednesday, I'll probably be prohibited from driving for at least a week.

TV time now...

Been busy today - went to the gym, trimmed Roxie's nails and gave her a bath, continued the cleaning project in my bedroom (including hauling a half dozen heavy crates down the stairs), took out a ton of trash, and vacuumed the entire upstairs. The hands, knees and shoulders are already achy breaky and I hate to think what it'll be like tomorrow. Meanwhile, I took the Mazda to the garage for an oil change...and got hit with an $1,100 shock and strut job. Which left me begging Mom for money, since that bill is oh, about 10% of my annual take home pay. The only bright side is the new stuff is lifetime-guaranteed, so I don't have to fork over $700 for struts again. But right now, ouch.

Ordinarily I would wait a while after winning to even claim the prize, but there's an awesome house on the market that I absolutely love. So as soon as I had the lawyer/accountant/adviser thing set up I would buy that house. (And a car with 4 wheel drive because the driveway to that house kinda requires it.) And that would be it for big purchases.
