I did two things, actually. I finally moved from LJ to Dreamwidth, and I finally posted something. Took a few tries to get the move to work, which it finally has, and now posting mostly to let everyone know that I'm over here now. Still likely my only use of DW will be when I want to write something that's too long for a tweet, but hey, I'm here.

Part of why I dragged myself back to LJ (and the entire reason I broke down and got a Twitter account) is that I haven't gone all in on a fandom since 'Serenity'. Nothing has risen to the level of obsession/fanfic writing/fanart creation since then...and then Daredevil happened.

The first thing I notice is that I don't like binging. Maintaining a discussion about a show works a lot better when there's an episode a week and everyone watches it at roughly the same time. While right now binging isn't a logistical problem for me (obviously, since I've watched Daredevil in its entirety three times in addition to certain episodes repeatedly) if/when I get a job binging will be difficult.

The next thing I notice is - I can't find more than one or two places for fanfiction, fanart or fanvids. I'm still in a bunch of LJ groups that do fanvids, but nothing's coming through the pipeline, and I don't know where else people are putting the things. (It's bad enough I've gone to Twitter; I flat out refuse to Facebook.) I know of a whopping two places to post fanfic - FFF, which I hated 10 years ago, and An Archive Of Our Own (AO3), which is where I'm doing all my fan reading/posting. Fanart seems to be Twitter/Instagram or bust. Am I wrong about this? Am I just failing to find the right places/sources? Or is Facebook the only game in town?

In any event, I'm hoping to do some Daredevil fanart if my hand will permit. (Big if.) And I wrote my first fanfic in 10 years, which I posted at AO3, an alternate take on the aftermath of Daredevil Episode 9 entitled 'Turn Right' (a play on the Dr Who ep 'Turn Left'). http://archiveofourown.org/works/3970270/chapters/8906503 BTW, the last fanfic I wrote was a short piece for Firefly, and I can't find it. I thought I had copies of everything I wrote, but I can't find that one anywhere, and the site I posted it to no longer exists. If by some miracle someone remembers it/where it was and can point me to it that would be most excellent.

There are times when I've wanted to post to LJ, just because I had to say something. Invariably these times are when I'm driving/trying to sleep/otherwise not in a position to post. But most of the time I just have nothing to say. The last couple of years have sucked donkey balls and they do right now as well, which really discourages me from wanting to write or post. I want to be better about this. I will start small, with what I did today.

I have been doing the occasional transport for a dog rescue, and today I drove out to Hagerstown for the first time in 8-9 years to pick up a huge, hairy & pretty loopy Great Pyrenees named Aimes. I wanted to eat at my favorite restaurant in Hagerstown (awesome sushi) but it turns out they close between lunch & dinner, so I drove around a while. Hagerstown has not changed. Same stores, same stadium, same crappy rundown factories, really identical to last decade. I had meant to go up early and visit Antietam because I never have been there, though I've certainly been close, but I overslept. Boogers. In any event, Aimes was a gentleman and now he's in foster care waiting for his forever home.

The reason (well, one of them) I overslept is because for the first time in ages I'm having a fandom attack. I binge-watched the new Marvel series 'Daredevil' in 3 days and I am now quite obsessed. Always did like that comic, but wasn't expecting to become obsessed. Maybe it's because the show is the epitome of hurt/comfort genre, or maybe just because I forgot how amazing Charlie Cox's lips are. Especially with some scruff. Yummy, yummy. Need fic. Need vids. Need Charlie for my very own. And for some odd reason I like the black ninja outfit better than the red leather one. Go figure.

OK, so, anyone besides me can't get LJ to cooperate this week? I've been able to manage just one comment and one post this week, and those only came from switching to Chrome. And that was a really marginal improvement. I've had a lot of trouble with the compie this week, it's fully updated, turned it on and off a few times, cleared the cache, Norton says all clear, but it's still cranky. Eesh.

I passed on Menygwacon, I'm exhausted, the weather is lousy and I'm just not up to driving a distance in 'mixed precipitation' and then dealing with their crazy neighbors and certain unpleasant gamers. So instead I took down and put away all the Christmas decorations (before you say it's early, Mom wanted them down on Christmas), and then sat down to mainline 'Homeland'. I have all of that and Dexter recorded and waiting for marathons, and today I watched six straight eps. I'd like to finish it tomorrow except football will likely get in the way, but I should be able to finish all of both shows by the time I go back to work Wednesday. Meanwhile,

it takes some balls to waltz in and blow away an FBI task force. Meeps.

I only think of posting when I'm driving or trying to sleep lately. And I don't remember it when I get home/wake up.

Enjoy the silence, I guess.

Terrific

I opened up LJ to post and...forgot what I was going to post. Great. I'm officially old.

Um. Wow.

So I posted yesterday evening, and didn't look at LJ again until just now. Thus I have only just learned about the passing of [livejournal.com profile] popfiend's soulmate Lisa. Which is leaving me rather stunned for O's loss. And at a loss for words.

I'm running a test to see who's reading my posts. So, if you read this, leave me a one-word comment about your day that starts with the third letter of your LJ USERNAME. Only one word please. Then repost so I can leave a word for you. Don't just post a word and not copy - that's not as much fun!

Narcoleptic. I slept the last couple days, but I feel like I haven't slept a wink.

Just saying.

A Reminder

I have surgery in about 2 hours. They're doing a synovectomy on my right index finger. What I was told initially is that my hand will be in a cast for several days, so typing will be difficult at best. I probably won't be posting at least until the cast is off, and maybe not then, depending on how much my hand hurts.

So, to all: Let's be careful out there!

It's been oddly up and down...

Originally I was supposed to be at a memorial service for my uncle, but his friends didn't want to have one and finally said so a few days ago. So no service. And between the short notice and a broken toe, I didn't think going to the 'restore sanity' gig was a good idea. So no big whoops today.

Went on another 'ornament quest' to Westminster - no ornaments there. They did still have DecoColor pens, which they're clearing out, so I was able to stock up on some colors I could use. Then gaming - a place that usually goes Friday nights when I'm too tired, but ran Saturday this time. Finally learned to play Maori, more than a year after it was first suggested to me.

Home was different too. Did woodburning for the first time in a year instead of doing ornaments. Killed my hand in the process.

Last but not least, I had to unfriend someone who was pretty much the first person I ever friended. We've been RL friends for almost 10 years and often roomed/rode together to events, but she's decided she doesn't want to be friends with anyone who won't switch to Dreamwidth. I'm on more sites/networks/etc than I'm comfortable with in the first place and I don't like being ordered to do something. And she pretty much announced that if you won't switch, then unfriend her. So I did. Not happy about it but I figure it's really her decision - she's the one giving ultimatums. Sad, but clearly we're no longer on the same page, literally.

Today was Mom's hip replacement surgery, and I had to have her at the hospital by 5:30am. Which meant, amongst myself, the dogs and her, I had to get up before 4am to get everything done. Fortunately I did get it done, we walked into the hospital at exactly 5:30, and after a lot of slow test/paperwork/procedure finally sent her off to OR at 7:15. I settled in for a wait. The good news is the waiting room had free wi-fi. Bad news - a lot of websites were blocked from it, including LJ and all of my e-mail accounts. I was able to catch up on news but that was it. I tried gaming - that worked OK at first, then it started blocking gaming sites 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. I gave up and switched over to reading Doctor Who: The Quality of Leadership, which includes stories by [livejournal.com profile] terri_osborne , [livejournal.com profile] neadods , [livejournal.com profile] tiggerallyn , [livejournal.com profile] puppetmaker40 and [livejournal.com profile] kradical , among others. I have had this book since February of 2009 and I finished it today. Yes, I am most embarrassed. And for better or worse, it's the only work of fiction I've read in the last 18 months. Yikes.

Mom came through the surgery fine (the anesthesiologist told me she only used half the allotted morphine; I asked if I could have the rest. Yeah, I went there :) ) She'll be in the hospital until at least Sunday. I wandered off and got lunch while I waited for her to be moved to a room, then went up there to wait for her to wake up. She was reasonably awake when I left. I tried to get home before the rain started but failed miserably - anyone want some wet, muddy dogs?

And oh yeah, just if anyone was wondering - Mom is not in THAT hospital. She's at GBMC, where just about everyone was quite glued to the television over the Hopkins situation, which needless to say was a bad case of a seriously messed up person being allowed to have a gun. I imagine there'll be metal detectors at hospitals next week. Terrific. Off to my PT now.

With all the LJ drama and idiocy about, a more peaceful image:

This baby was born at the State Fair Friday.

I don't have accounts with Facebook or Twitter, so no one need fear me doing this to you.

However, I'd appreciate it if you don't cross-post things posted to my LJ.

Thanks.

To that end, first: Current icon

Now, new icon:

My photoshop skills are apparently a bit wanting, it didn't seem to want to 'replace color' so I had to do it bit by bit, but all the same, we are now current. Poor Donovan.

I made me some Ravens userpics. And uploaded them to my scrapbook instead of the userpics section. Brilliant. I'll try again on that tonight.

Meanwhile, there's some serious bugs/trojans/hacking going around. My Norton has been death-wrestling a Trojan since last night, and the boss and supervisor have both had their e-mail accounts turned zombie. Tread carefully, everyone.

As of a couple minutes ago, I am a paid user of LJ (thanks for the coupon [livejournal.com profile] crysania4 !)

Although I don't know what all I'm going to do with the new bells and whistles for now...

Yep, I Did

New icon (my Kermy-dear), new colors and layout, new subtitle and friends page titles.

It was time for change.

After editing and reposting my last entry nearly a dozen times, I finally figured out what is causing the cut to disappear. Certain names. If I put in certain LJ users (OK, [personal profile] terri_osborne  and [profile] silver_cyanne ) for whatever reason the cut immediately ceases to exist at their names. Leastways, that's what's screwing up the Shore Leave posts. I'm flummoxed.
gonzai: (Booth)
First things first - happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] sidewinder !

The shoulder is absolutely killing me today, and the pain is going through my neck, back and down to my elbow. No fun. And I'm absolutely wiped out, partly from waking up every time I move and partly from CJ not quite grasping that we don't get up at 6:30 on Saturday and Sunday. Eeesh.

Terminator was cancelled, dammit. I continue to maintain it was one of the very best shows on television last year and I wanted more more more. F*X sucks.

The attorney who was dismissed from the firm last week - change the locks and passwords dismissed - is coming in for an exit interview today. Awkward much?

Oh yeah, and some moron on LJ decided to post a pic of two naked men performing a sex act to a community, with no cut, link or warning. I'm damn lucky no one at work saw that. I didn't want to see it either, that community is supposed to be for discussing a television show and if I wanted to see that stuff, I'd join a community for that, not a tv show. Did I say moron? How about rude, asinine, moron?
