I'm playing a game of Puerto Rico right now. Myself (in the USA); a guy in Brazil; a guy in South Africa; and a guy/gal in Singapore. Could we possibly be any more farflung and/or diverse? I don't think so.

While I was typing last night, the power went out. The battery backup is supposed to last 30 minutes, but only lasted 5. Lasted long enough for me to post and shut down the computer at least. And that was it for the power for 15 hours. No AC, in 100 degree weather. The radio stations I listen to were knocked off the air; my cell phone's tower was out. One of our oak trees came down on the neighbor's fence, I photographed it but they're not home and I'm sure the insurance and tree people are a little busy right now. It's been a rough day. I had to drive 10 miles out to get breakfast and a cell phone signal to call my brother about Mom's car, just so he could tear me a new one because Mom doesn't understand anything he says to her. Among other things, I asked if we could stay at his air-conditioned house and was informed he didn't particularly want either me or Mom there and don't you dare think of bringing a dog here. Well, at least I know if there's trouble at home, don't even bother asking my brother for help, just go straight to friends. F**k him.

Anyway, power's back for now, so trying to watch some TV while we have it.

Zoiks!

Megaupload Shut Down )
Well, this sucks.

Happened acrossGeek Chic ) today - extremely expensive custom furniture, but very nice stuff. More importantly, the site itself is hilarious. Enjoy :)
gonzai: (Tired)
Right after I posted last night, Mom came home. With my nephews in tow. School had been cancelled again and Mom was on grandson duty for at least another 24 hours. So instead of getting some sleep, I was shanghaied into Dominion and a late night. Then this morning, it took me over an hour to get to work due to traffic, then when I got to the office it turned out we had no internet at the office. You don't know how dependent your office is on the net until it's gone. We couldn't get much of anything done all day and there's no guarantee we'll have the net back tomorrow. Sheesh.

The rock 'em sock 'em thunderstorms continued today and this time, we lost power. It was out for two hours, during which we discovered that candles really don't produce a lot of light, it's hard to eat crabs in the dark, and electricity is essential for just about everything. The power came back just as it was getting too dark to do anything at all, and thankfully everything in the fridge & freezer should be OK. The annoying thing is that while the telephone and internet service are both back, the television isn't. (All three are FiOS.) The settop box doesn't seem to be functioning, despite much fiddling and experimenting. So no Ravens/Chiefs, and no FiOS Movie Night. We thought choosing between 'The King's Speech' and 'True Grit' was going to be tough. Instead we get neither. Blast. Hope it's working tomorrow, but what with the strike and all, if the box is fried we will be sans cable/DVR indefinitely. Nuts.

I have been far too entertained by  this thread from Board Game Geek )  today. So I'm sharing. You need not be familar with board games, just cats. Oh, and have a good sense of humor about cats, a couple folks don't seem to enjoy cat jokes. But if you don't mind some silliness at feline expense, it's been a fun day.

Zooborns, a website of nothing but baby animals )
I saw the book at Borders the other day, but didn't realize it was a website. I could be here a while, dying of the cute!

Watched 'The Bourne Ultimatum' in its entirety last night. I'm exhausted.

Re 'Leverage' - how can a company with some 500 employees not have at least ONE person who knows who Emma Peel and John Steed are? On the other ep, what a perfect musical selection to base the ep on. I do like me some 'Scheheradze'.

I do not, however, like my DVR right now. At least with regard to TNT. Leverage didn't record Sunday. It did last Sunday, no problem. It appeared on the recording schedule. But it didn't record. Checking it, it says it's set to record new AND old eps. I set it to record only new ones. And instead it records nothing. Meanwhile, 'Men of a Certain Age' and 'The Closer' were also set to record new eps only. The recording schedule says it's programmed to record old MOCA eps, but isn't set to record new Closer eps. WTF is going on?

Could say that about my Verizon account, too. It's refusing to recognize my user name and password. Same ones that worked fine yesterday, but it won't take them. So I tried signing on with my phone number. It says my phone number doesn't exist. That number has existed and been assigned to me/my family since 1971, thanks. Tried customer support and got a message that they were closed...at 10am ET on a Wednesday. Blast it.

Got quite pounded upon at PT last night. Last time for a couple weeks, they couldn't squeeze me in the next two, so we'll see how it goes. I do seem to have lost a couple of pounds in the meantime.

Beautiful day in the neighborhood today. 80, sunny, no humidity. Ah, sweet paradise...

gonzai: (Bad Day)
Watching the pre show, and realizing, much to my chagrin...no way I can stay awake for the finale. No way I wake up the next day either. A day without the internet is upon me...
gonzai: (Updated)
On the one hand, I like when web sites are updated promptly.

On the other, it's a bit unnerving when they're updated while you're looking at them. Was that there a second ago? Am I hallucinating?

But in the long run, it is good to know the Bowie Baysox will start the season with 2 catchers and 3 outfielders after all. I'd just rather they didn't add the balance of the roster while I'm trying to read the initial roster!

I made me some Ravens userpics. And uploaded them to my scrapbook instead of the userpics section. Brilliant. I'll try again on that tonight.

Meanwhile, there's some serious bugs/trojans/hacking going around. My Norton has been death-wrestling a Trojan since last night, and the boss and supervisor have both had their e-mail accounts turned zombie. Tread carefully, everyone.

From the living room. Yes, I have the netbook networked. It's sucking down a nice speed from the FiOS router. Happy.

Now if I could just eat something, or sleep for a week. Either would be good.

I totally forgot that pt 2 of Dr Who was today. (Then again, I'm not entirely clear at the moment what day today is. And I didn't drink last night.)

Meanwhile, I see we (the collective Who fans of the universe) are busy breaking the internet. We're an industrious bunch.

Then for cryin' out loud, don't fix it!

Yahoo revamped their main page last night. I really, really don't like the new layout. I can't find anything. And I'm particularly annoyed with how yesterday I lived in Baltimore, Maryland but today I apparently live in Richmond, Virginia. Yahoo, of its own accord, changed my regional settings and I haven't figured out how to change them back yet. In the meantime, I honestly don't care what's going on in Shockoe Bottom, thanks.
