Home and trying to catch up on the DVR now.

Got to meet Giancarlo Esposito and talk H:LotS with him; talked board games with Felicia Day and hockey with Lee Arenberg; and Bonita Friedercy & John Billingsley were hysterical. I want film of their panels, I will PAY for those films. I was part of the fun on Saturday, when my attempts to get Bonita's opinion of Timothy Olyphant's backside turned into John attempting to instigate a Ravens/Steelers brawl. They are SO funny.

Meanwhile, I learned to play the card game 'Poo' from jslinder and returned the favor by teaching him, another gamer and a complete stranger to play Castles of Burgundy. Panels didn't go quite so well, problem wasn't the panels but that once again the con put children's programming in the next room and once again the kids were allowed, if not encouraged to run wild. Noise, noise & more noise, drowning out our attempts at discussion. Similar problem with the inaugural Geek Speed-dating - we were all crammed into a small room and we couldn't hear each other. I had almost no voice left afterwards. And only one guy professed interest in me. Plenty of visiting with folks I know, unusually good eating for a con, etc. Generally a good weekend.

The Washington Capitals just hired Adam Oates to be the new head coach. He replaces Dale Hunter, and joins Jim Johnson on the coaching staff. Suddenly it's the late 90s and I'm hanging out at Caps practice.

I'll Have Another may not have run, but the Belmont turned out to be quite the race anyway. I thought Paynter might actually pull off the wire-to-wire thing. Darn close though. And the race before it, the Manhattan, was televised as well and that was needed a photo for the finish as well. Good stuff.

Now I'm watching the Devils & the Kings. Glad to see the Devils not taking this elimination thing lying down. Kinda scary though, that I first met/got an autograph from Marty Brodeur - almost 20 years ago Meepers.

I know it wasn't entirely Bruins fans, but it was the majority. They know who they are.

PS - why do the OT goals always come a couple minutes after I give up and go to bed? I wasn't even asleep yet. I coulda had a living room party, dangnabbit.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I don't really collect anything these days - I still get games, DVDs and CDs from time to time, but I don't get much and I don't really consider them collections.

In the past, I collected baseball and hockey memorabilia (including a lot of autographs), and as a kid I collected glass animals.

Spent a lot of last night watching sports news and looking for the autographs and photos I have of the players who died. I have come to a conclusion: whatever filing system I was using for my autographs made sense to me at the time, but it surely doesn't now. I didn't expect to find my photos, but I thought I'd come up with more than 2 autographs. I couldn't even find the binders for post-2001. I did find my Wade Belak stash, however.

So, RIP to everyone on the plane and to Wade, and may something like this never, ever happen again.

I'm actually starting to feel glad I'm not into hockey anymore, because this year is turning into a nightmare. All but one person on board the plane died, and while no one has been confirmed dead, I knew to one extent or another several of the players believed to have been on board. Coaches Brad McCrimmon, Alexander Karpovtsev and Igor Korolev; and players Ramzi Abid, Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karel Rachunek and Josef Vasicek all played in the NHL during my heyday with the sport and somewhere in the basement is an assortment of autographs from and photographs with all of them. Can anything else possibly happen to hockey this year? Do we even want to think about it?

Updated: Abid & Salei were not on the plane.

Further Updated: Now they say Salei was on the plane.

Recently retired NHLer Wade Belak committed suicide yesterday. )
The last hockey work stoppage knocked me out of the sport, so I didn't know Derek Boogard or Rick Rypien. But Wade Belak came into pro hockey just a couple years after I did, and started his career at Hershey, which was my minor league hockey base. I wrote about AHL hockey for a few years for an online magazine, and one of my first interviews was...Wade Belak. It was an interesting interview; he showed up for it stark naked. He said he'd forgotten he had an interview after practice and didn't have time to dress. I told him no worries, I can wait until you put on some pants! He came back a minute later in sweat pants and we proceeded with the interview. Besides being a bit of a goof, Wade was always great with the fans, esp the kids, and hung around long after practices and games to chat. I bought one of his used practice jerseys; it's in the closet, signed. I think I might wear it today. Might be a bit warm, but it's the least I can do.

Seriously people? WTF?

One of my past lives was as a diehard hockey fan (and, for a time, journalist) and normally when the Capitals aren't involved, I root for the Canadian teams. And I've never been especially fond of the Bruins. But the boorish-at-best and thuggish-at-worst behavior of the Canucks' players already had me rooting for the Bruins, and now, given the fans' behavior, I'm very glad the Canucks lost. Neither the team nor its fans deserved playoffs, much less finals. What losers.

This morning came the news that former NHLer Bob Probert died suddenly yesterday at age 45. Well, maybe not entirely suddenly - Bob seemed to have been working on dying for most of his life. I think Mitch Albom summed up Probert much better than I could. )
I did manage to get his autograph a couple times. Not exactly a work of art, but then, neither was Bob. And considering the condition of his hands, it's rather amazing he could hold a pen. He was doing well on the occasions I met him, sober and trying to rebuild himself, but it never lasted for long. Be at peace, sir.

Followed a vehicle home much of the way today. This fellow must have issues. His license plate is USA Hockey sponsored tags (I had no idea MD issued those; may have to look into that) and his license plate frame was...Montreal Canadiens.

One or the other dude. You can't have both.

What was that, Capitals? Seriously, WTF? The best team in the regular season and it wasn't even close? Dominating all season long against all comers? Prohibitive favorite for the Cup?

Eliminated in the first round by an 8 seed that barely made the playoffs.

Again, WTF?

My original plan for today was sleeping in and going to a charity hockey game where some of the ex-Capitals I used to know were playing. Instead, spent most of the day shopping for a sofa. We think we found one, but we'll see - in the store it was the perfect shade of green, but fortunately for us, the store manager let us take swatches home. In the house, the same material appeared light gray. No green in it at all. But another swatch looked good, so we're getting that. Did some other shopping and Mom wanted to go to Outback and get her favorite lamb dish, so we did that. Now home, where I've finished up some paperwork and computer stuff, and now we're settled in and watching 'The Inside' - I saw the first couple eps when they aired originally, but never saw the later ones or the ones that didn't air. Wolfram Security, heh heh.

80%

According to the early ratings returns, 80% of Canadians watched the Canada/US gold medal hockey game Sunday. Let me say that again: 80%. You couldn't get 80% of Americans to agree the sky is blue, much less watch the same TV program.

Wow.

Interesting that both the men's and women's hockey finished in the same order (Canada/USA/Finland). But I'm not sure whether or not I'm happy about the men's gold medal game. The final second tie-up and OT were exciting as heck, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have preferred that Canada won it in regulation so that the game wouldn't be won by Sidney Crosby. I'm sick of hearing about him, and now I'm sick of looking at him. Enough already.

Normally, I don't root for the US teams in sports. I don't care for the mentality in the USA that only the Americans count. But in the case of ice hockey, it's the Canadians who make me feel that way. The attitude that if they put together a team of All-Star NHL players they should be given a gold medal without actually playing galls me no end. So the USA's defeat of the Canadians last night amuses me no end. Especially since the US hasn't beaten the Canadians in 50 years (yes, 50) and the team is almost entirely youngsters chosen for the ability to play as a team (shades of 1980...). Of course, given that Switzerland took Canada to the mat earlier in the tournament, I suspect this Canadian team just isn't anywhere near as good as they'd like to think they are.

Oh yeah, and I picked the Swedes before the tournament. Not backing off that pick yet.

Something new to make me feel old. The retirement of NHL goaltender Olaf Kolzig.

Olie the goalie arrived as a backup in Washington right about the same time I discovered ice hockey and, by extension, the Capitals. We were six months apart in age and had similar interests, so we talked a lot at Caps practices. (We won't get into how many autographs I have from him.) I did a couple of portraits of him in various Caps gear and went to see him when he sent to the minors. When he became a 'star' player, he didn't always stop to give autographs after practice (too many people out there) but always had time to stop and talk to me. I haven't seen him since the Capitals moved their practice facility to Virginia, and last year he had a falling out with the Capitals and played last season with Tampa. Now he's retiring. Seventeen years of hockey, always with Olie the goalie in the picture.

It'll be way different watching hockey this season. I'm already greatly diminshed in my interest and the absence of Olie won't help.

But apparently the Caps didn't need me in red last night. Ovechkin and Varlamov handled everything just fine, thanks. And dueling hat tricks. Nice game.

Although, Crosby complaining about people throwing hats after a hat trick? Huh? Yo, traditionalists, your golden boy just trashed one of your most cherished traditions.

Had two biggies today - went with the only red shirt I could find for the Caps/Pens game and nearly had a few heart attacks watching. I suspect the Caps' defense is going to be thoroughly ripped by the coaching staff tonight. But not half so much as the Pens' D will be. Awesome save by Varlamov on Crosby. Most happy with the end result as well.

Don't know quite what to make of the Kentucky Derby, other than I hope they bring Mine That Bird to Baltimore for the Preakness. Quite a ride Borel gave MTB on the rail. I was creamed on my picks, only Pioneerof The Nile even finished in the top half, but that was a race.
