Eastwatch

Just me, blathering a few thoughts on tonight's GOT:

You know how in Lord of the Rings/Hobbit the Eagles just suddenly show up and deus ex machina all over the place? Any reason the dragons couldn't just fly to Eastwatch and torch the White Walkers? Or at least, send one dragon to snag a Walker and haul it back, easy peasy.

Joe Dempsie has turned into Christian Bale. This is not a bad thing.

Slow your roll on the whole 'Jon is the rightful King of Westeros!' thing. If Rhaegar did indeed get an annulment and marry Lyanna, that means that Rhaegar is an even bigger jerk to his wife than we already knew, and that Jon is legitimate. Fine. However, it doesn't necessarily make him King of Westeros. Daenerys is the Mad King's daughter, Jon is his grandson. Depending on how they do lines of succession (and Targaryens are big on weird family lines) Jon may well be SECOND in line, not the King yet.

Wonder how Samwell is going to find out about his family. He could be Lord Tarly now, if he wanted. (Doubt it.)

If I were Bronn...I think I might take a little non-King's Landing vacay right now.

Oh, and what is the appropriate discipline for a dog who decided it wants outside during the opening credits? And less than 30 minutes after the last outing?

My string of minor successes last week (finished watching Charlie Cox's entire filmography, trivia team won both the final game of the session and the entire session, had two promising possible jobs on Friday) has come to a crashing halt, it would seem. I tried to play trivia last night, an all Game of Thrones night for extra seeding points, but the restaurant had cancelled all Sunday games for the rest of the year (football). However, the trivia company never took it down from their web site, never told the hosts the theme nights were off, and when I called the restaurant to confirm, the woman who answered said yes, they're having trivia tonight. So I skipped part of the Ravens game and drove an hour plus tolls, only to discover nope, no trivia. And got to watch the Ravens implode. Yay.

Then there was the temp-to-hire job I was to start today. It lasted less than 4 hours. I went home for lunch and while there got a call from the temp agency that they didn't want me to come back. Work-wise, it seemed okay, I hit it off with my trainer (who turned out to be a neighbor) and it was something I certainly could do, but I'd already realized I could not, in good conscience, work there. And while I hadn't said so, they must have figured that out. The main business of the law firm was finding legal loopholes for their clients to get around firearms background checks, CCW regulations, and generally selling weapons. Their one client this morning was crowing about the new silencer they'd helped him buy. Sorry, but no. Guns may be legal, but that doesn't mean I have to help people get them.

I will be calling the other job in a few minutes to see if, hopefully, that one works out better.

Last year, I barely managed to be at Balticon because of Mom issues. So I was promoted from volunteer to staff. Go figure. This year, I managed to rack up 30 hours on the job in the art show. Except, that's all I did. One pass of the dealer's room, two panels (one of which was in the art show room), never set foot in the west side of the hotel much less in the game room. Just art show and trooping back and forth between the show and the bathroom/registration desk for three days. The con debuted a new computer system which...didn't work as planned...and only one guy knew how to fix it. I swear, my primary job all weekend was to go to registration and drag said guy back to the art room.

Meanwhile, I have only two weeks of unemployment left and no prospects on the horizon, so my purchasing consisted of the con t-shirt (which is gorgeous, BTW) and two inexpensive prints. And breakfast from 7-11/Royal Farms each morning. That's it. A cheap, hard-working weekend. I did manage to trade 'trade secrets' with the Art GOH, Ruth Sanderson, regarding scratchboard, and I went to a sci-fi trivia competition, was teamed with someone I've never met at random, and we creamed everyone. She knew books & anime, I knew TV, movies & games, we rolled.

Next year - for them's haven't heard, it's Balticon 50(!), the GOH is George R.R. Martin and Balticon is headed to the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Baltimore, right on the Inner Harbor. And I'm the 'co-Art Show Director'. My co-director has already told me she prefers pre-con prep to the con itself, so I'm pretty much in charge of the art show. Meep.

Yes. That's Bronn. Five or six broken noses ago.

I'm in shock.
gonzai: (Yummy)
So I've been watching a bunch of TV shows and movies lately...a LOT of them...and I've concluded that there are three things I really, really can't deal with seeing on film.

1. Cruelty/violence to animals
2. Heights and the view therefrom
3. Decapitation.

Which begs the question - why in the HELL do I watch Game of Thrones? 'tis a mystery.

(And dang it, Daredevil hit 2 of the 3)

And despite much stress and sleepiness, I haven't made too many dumb mistakes. Which is more than I can say for a lot of other people. However, I haven't even been on the west side of the hotel yet. And yes that includes the game room. If I'm still functional when the art show closes tomorrow, I'll drag myself over there. On the other hand, I picked up a very nice, 12-map collection for A Song of Ice & Fire. Now for sleep...

So let's see...

1. Going nowhere, literally. The occasional walk and that's it. Falling off the eating wagon as well, but so far no weight change.

2. Maintenance mode. Nothing new in the cleaning but nothing already done is backsliding.

3. Keeping up with TV OK, and proceeding steadily with the movies. Finished A Storm of Swords and Under the Dome, and just started on back issues of the Atlantic. Getting better with the music, listening a couple hours a week to various music samplers. Also, Freebo is a good musical artist if you are a dog person, and the Lone Bellow are awesome.

4. Financially spending too much, but that happens with multiple birthdays, holidays, conventions and car insurance in the space of six weeks. The car's tuneup and new glasses will have to wait for a while, but I should be able to cover this.

5. Look at that. Still at the same job. Which is not to say I don't have a dozen job postings saved and some really strong leads for vet work if shit happens. The boss hasn't been too bad this month, although the supervisor isn't around much (gone again this week on short notice) and the junior attorneys are being a pain. Hanging on, anyway.

A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords are both long, long books. So is Under the Dome. It took me 5 weeks to read ACoK and 6 to read ASoS. It took me 2 weeks to read Under the Dome.

Now, I'm sure some of this is due to UoD having very long chapters and ASoIF having short ones; when I'm reading at home or at my leisure, I read a chapter at a time, so I read more of UoD at a time. And, with Martin's books, I have to stop regularly to check maps or family trees.

But still, dang King is an easier read than Martin.

From what I'm seeing in previews, UoD won't hold a candle to GoT, so Martin keeps the television prize.

OK, so the whole kingdom's at war, no one is bathed or primped outside of King's Landing...but they found the time to crimp the horse's mane. Right then.

ETA - The business with Podrick & the whorehouse...I don't recall that from the books, but I certainly appreciated it :)
gonzai: (Dexter)
My goal was to finish 'A Storm Of Swords' by the premiere of GoT. Whoops. Six days late. But I got out ahead of the tv show at least. For 24 hours. Since they decided to throw in some stuff from book 4 or 5 (the Theon stuff). But I was familiar with that storyline, at least, and I knew the rest of it. On to 'Under The Dome' now, try to finish that before it hits TV.

Reviewing them with myself won't work unless I actually do it, right?

1 Gym - Really screwed this pooch. I actually cancelled my gym membership today. Haven't been there since December, which amounts to throwing $200 in a hole, so I cancelled. Trying to walk CJ a few times a week for now.

2 Cleaning - Got the computer room completely cleaned up; this weekend, it's sort and put away all the papers and DVDs sitting around. Assuming I actually do it, plus one for me.

3 Media - Caught up on TV (finally finished the last season of Sarah Jane Adventures) and the movie thing is progressing in a timely manner. Still having trouble with music (headphones broke, but I wasn't being good before that happened) and behind on reading, although 'Storm of Swords' is coming along. I may finish it before GoT comes back.

4 Money - The car is paid off and I have the title from the bank. It needs to be re-titled to just me (which apparently isn't cheap) but otherwise all good. Tax refunds are in the bank. CJ goes to the vet next week, hoping to get myself to the dentist the week after, then glasses and fixing up the car.

5 2013 - Not so hot. Mom continues to decline and I have now fully taken over all paperwork and bills from her, my health isn't improving to include a new assortment of GI issues (already saw the doctor, tests being run this month), and I'm amazed I'm still employed. I'm bored stiff at work and my hands are killing me, but still there. I have lost a few pounds, surprisingly, and I'm eating a bit more healthy, but that's about it.

So, walking the dog, continue gradual cleanup, stay on top of TV and movies, do something with the music, keep getting things done for myself and Mom until caught up. Mission assigned.

I finally finished reading the book, ten months after I bought it and 3 months after I started reading it. (I had to get a move on, the Horde is collectively reading a Civil War historical tome and I didn't want to start thinking dragons fought for the North and the South was full of wights.) A few thoughts, without spoilers:

1) Damn, but the TV show hews closely to the book. I'm not sure I've ever encountered film that faithful to its book.

2) Every once in a while, a visual piece is superior to its written source. This is one of them. Even with the addition of naked women, the TV show is an improvement on the book, and I think it's the POV. The show is omniscient; we see everything and without bias. The books are limited by the POV, not everything is seen or heard and it's all very biased.

3) That said, the books are helpful for the details and the history. You can exposition-dump history in a book, but not on TV.

Time to read about Reconstruction (yippee) and then maybe on to Clash of Kings. Hopefully will have a Kindle by then. It would help.

One thing I didn't get was the very last scene with the horde o' zombies. Why didn't they kill/eat Sam? Lunch for everybody, right? I'm so confused.

gonzai: (Checking In)
Phew. Means I am no longer obligated at Balticon and any further time I spend is free and my own. Haven't decided if I'll go back tomorrow or not, will probably decide in the morning. Esp. since all there is for me, anyway, is gaming. I bought 3 pieces of art for myself and the con t-shirt and that was it for purchases. The art show was very weird all day, they tried something new with the computer/inventory system Saturday night which turned out to screw up a lot of the purchases and give us plenty of headaches. I vote we don't try it again next year. A badly written bid turned into a full-blown soap opera. The auction coordinator stepped out for lunch and didn't come back until 5 minutes before the auction, and he had never requested assistants so he lucked out that I was running around trying to find him, I assisted. And I packed up all but one of the mail-in artists, right after I hung every one of them. We need more people there. COMPETENT people, I should add.

At any rate, I'm home, CJ seems happy, Mom hasn't burned down the house. I should be watching Game of Thrones, shouldn't I?

Spoilers, as you might imagine )
gonzai: (Checking In)
Specifically,

Today I:
  • finally finished sorting and putting away my papers
  • carried 4 crates of stuff upstairs
  • stripped and remade the bed
  • did 2 loads of laundry
  • broke down CJ's old crate
  • set up her new crate
  • renewed her license
  • took CDs back to the library
  • burned DVDs
  • sorted and put away already done DVDs
  • repaired a painting on the wall that had slipped its frame
  • did the grocery shopping (did you know they make banana soda?)
  • finally watched a movie on the DVR (even as I added 2 more, of course)
For the record, the movie was 'The Lovely Bones', so now I know what Peter Jackson & Richard Taylor think the afterlife looks like. Creative fellows, they are. Also, my hand, my shoulder and my back are killing me. I hate to think what I'll feel like tomorrow.
gonzai: (McGeek)
And still a show short of being caught up, much less getting started on the movies occupying the DVR.

Quick reactions, with spoilers to include a whopper of a spoiler for Game of Thrones )
gonzai: (McGeek)
Not a whole lot of spoilers, but just in case.
