Euroquest Recap

Another year, another Euroquest on the books. It's the only gaming tournament I participate in, so I was there for pretty much the duration & participated in as many tournaments as I could. Skipped the wild card this time, a whopping two Can't Stop games both of which were horrid, & only a few 'Play to Win' games, I played but didn't win. Also stayed out of the side tourneys & demos. In the past 5-6 years, I made it into 5 semi-finals & 1 final. This year, I made 2 finals, qualified for 6 semis and played in 4 of them. Twice I was eligible for 2 semis that were played at the same time. Figures. Also was reduced to just 1 heat of Ticket to Ride - my strong game - by both finals being against TTR heats. My one heat of TTR (& lone heat of Castles of Burgundy, another one I'm good at) were atrociously bad. Some of the worst games I've every played of them.

Meanwhile, I learned two tourney games this year - Thurn Und Taxis, where I picked up two very close seconds, but opted for St Petersburg instead, in which I'd also landed a pair of seconds, played the semi against 3 sharks, & finished second again. They were all
convinced I was 'playing it wrong', but hey, I beat two of them. I've made semis in Settlers of Catan & Lords of Waterdeep before, but this time I graduated to the finals. I alternated terrible & great games at Settlers, meaning the great game was the semi & the terrible was the final. I wound up 4th. I never actually won a heat of Waterdeep, but did make the semis & won handily there. The final was close until the very end, when I finished 3rd. My friend Jay won the tourney. I rocked the Splendor heats, but came up one turn short in the semi. One more turn, augh. Last year I was knocked out of the Carcassonne tourney by the eventual champ; this year, I made it to the 'elite eight' before losing by 1 point. If nothing else, I seem to be getting generally better at tourney play.

The non-gaming aspects of the con...not so great. Won a game, but had no idea what any of the games were & picked something randomly. Went to the auction store & found one deal, but wasn't able to go back to bid on anything else. Couldn't afford to buy any new games. Locked my keys in the car Thursday night & had to get AAA out there. Lot of people I like to see didn't make it this year; lot of the ones that did make it weren't their usual selves this year.

Which leads to the part that the worst - one of my favorite people to play games with, Doug Hoylman, died last week. Pretty much that's all we know, he died. Doug had played nearly every game every created & he was a great & very willing teacher. He probably taught me half the games I know, even taught my nephews a couple games. A really patient & pleasant gentleman. we missed him this weekend & I'm already a bit adrift. I'm going to miss him a lot.

Christmas Eve, Check

Well, whaddya know - we have a white Christmas. Can't remember the last time that happened, but almost an inch of snow fell today, just enough to touch up everything. Nice. Unfortunately it also touched up the roads, a friend didn't even try to come after she barely made it home, and the family was late.

I've got a decent haul: the Kindle, of course; series 2 of 'Luther'; Dr Who's 'Christmas Carol' special; Cards Against Humanity; a party game called 'Martini Time', how appropriate; some books and some accessories for the Kindle. Promptly spent time playing backgammon with No. 1 nephew on the Kindle. Mom's haul included a book written by a certain meerkat-ish author (thanks for the signed nameplate, she loves it!) and a ton of Keurig-related things to include the machine itself. I don't drink much coffee, so I've never been inclined to invest in one; but the family is crazy for theirs and felt Mom should have one. Fortunately they did include a lot of tea for Mom and cider & chai for me. The boys were very happy with their games (Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride USA, and various card and Star Wars games), Janine loved the necklace & earrings and Mike is intrigued by his annual sampler CD.

The dinner was crazed; we did the usual pickup of a complete dinner at Safeway, but for some reason half the stuff was frozen solid. The turkey's juice overran the pan and caught fire in the oven, fortunately just smoke. The mashed potatoes needed over twice the recommended time to cook because they were an ice cube, and Mom forgot the vegetables until after everything else was cooked, so by the time the veggies were ready most things were cold :/  But it was a darn good turkey and mashed potatoes, and I suspect we'll be eating it all week.

Phew. Need bedtime. After I let out the hysterical dog.

The Games Before The Game

After an episode with taking things to the neighborhood dumpster day (like Mom changing her mind every couple days on whether we should dump anything and one item leaking black fluid all over the back seat of my car), I spent the rest of the day at a gaming birthday party. 50+ people in a house not meant for nearly that many people, plus multiple people with social skills issues. The main one being the 10 year old boy, whom I'd never met before, who greeted me at the door by grabbing my boobs. His mother seemed uninterested. Apparently he's autistic on some level, but really, that's not something the parents should be letting the kid do. Then I got into a Ticket to Ride team game with two people who claimed they played TTR and loved it. Turns out they've never played it before, AT ALL, which is not a good thing when playing the team game. A 3 hour game later...fortunately the gaming day improved after that, I got into a few games outside on the deck with people I like to play with. And now I'm home...

...and it's time I got cracking on prepping for tomorrow's entertainment. A charity softball game. The Ravens' offense vs the Ravens' defense. The weather is predicted to be pleasant (although it'll be better if I can find the darn sunblock) and the few comments I found online about previous softball games seem to indicate they're both fun and productive in the getting autographs category. Hopefully Mom can finally meet her beloved Ray Rice and get her jersey signed. Off to find that sunblock...

Balticon, In Progress

Well, worked my tailfeathers off in the art show yesterday, hanging all of the mail-in art and half the print shop and I have the raw knees, sore quads and achy back to prove it. It was all I did at the con yesterday other than a (very good) dinner. Today was the 'easy' day, with nothing to go up or come down. However, most of the day was either hectic (at one point 5 different people wanted my help at the same time) or completely dead. Thus, I called it a day at 7, helped a friend get registered, and then went up to gaming and squeezed in a couple of games, both of which I won easily. I wasn't surprised I won Ticket to Ride, the other players were not playing wisely, but I was surprised I won Carcassonne over 3 of the local Carc sharks. While I was playing that game, [livejournal.com profile] firesign10 happened to pass us in the hallway and by some miracle I recognized her, 'cause we've never met before. We didn't get to talk, though, because one of the Carc players was in a hurry to finish the game. Hopefully tomorrow.

But the big thing today was that before Balticon, I returned the Kindle to the person I bought it from. I did that not because I didn't like it, or because Mom didn't like it, but because...I couldn't register the danged thing with Amazon, which would kind of help for buying books and such. Amazon gave me a 'call customer service' alert, so I did. End result - seems the Kindle had been reported 'lost or stolen' back in December and accordingly, Amazon would not register it unless the person who made that report withdrew it. The person who sold it to me responded in 10 minutes to my e-mail and offered to return my money, so I really lucked out in that regard. We did like what we'd seen of it, so I'll probably wind up getting one somewhere along the line. Just not using Craigslist.

Farpoint, Abbreviated

Skipped the full convention this year. I was so busy in January and so tired, I wasn't sure I'd go at all. I settled for Sunday only, which turned out OK because most of the panels I was interested in were on Sunday. I had an hour to pick up autographs from Michael Hogan & Kate Vernon, and browse the dealers room. Took only half an hour as it turned out, there was no line for either actor and not much of interest in the dealers room. Picked up a few new games, including Ticket to Ride's newest version (India) and a couple goofy card games, 'Nuts' and 'Kittens in a Blender.' Yes, you read the last one right. Apparently a very popular game, I bought the last copy the guy had and evidently there were several rounds of it played prior to poker last night. Was pleasantly surprised to see [livejournal.com profile] jslinder and Pam, and visited en panel with the USS Chesapeake gang. We concluded that 'Chesapeake' is a Native American term meaning 'Attention Deficit Disorder.' And that was my Farpoint, however brief.

Last Night of the Year

And I'm home. Went out in search of scrubs earlier in the day (found a set in purple, of course, not too expensive, and also found some comfy shoes), then went gaming for a while. Somehow I managed to win all three games I played, even though 2 were new to me. Ticket to Ride: Asia was particularly amusing, as it's a partnership game, and as things happened, there was a lot of partner-swapping and at least one gender switch. We're weird. Learned another new one and won it, then won at Carcassonne. I managed to avoid the annoying players, and picked up a dogsitting gig along the way. I left early so as to avoid annoying drivers - didn't work. I even called 911 to report a really sloshed jackass who was driving 40 on I-95 but 70 on an offramp.

But now home, safe, probably bedding down early. Lots of stuff to do around the house and lots of football tomorrow, heh heh.

Happy Holidays!

Here I sit and wait for the Dr Who special...not patiently, I assure you! It's already been a Doctor-ful weekend, as I recorded several specials from BBC America and one of my gifts was the Series 5 DVD set. Also landed Series 1 of Luther, Ticket to Ride: Asia, 7 Wonders, and Transeuropa. That part of the haul was good. Unfortunately, my sister-in-law bought a bunch of clothing for Mom and I and I'm pretty sure not a single one of them fits. And Mike bought some bathroom fixtures for us with the intent of installing them, but somehow he had managed not to notice we had the bathroom redone in August. Oops. The boys were thrilled to pieces with their huge haul of Beyblades and Legos (of which we only produced a third or so), and the dinner turned out well despite Mom's insistence that she knew better how to cook a prepared meal than whoever had prepared it in the first place. It took a lot of work but most things only got cooked once, and except for the gravy not for overlong. But it took a lot of oversight!

We just got home from Mike's house, where it's tough to walk around with all the Beyblade & Lego detritus on the floor. Not safe to walk around either, as the boys are engaging in Nerf gun battles with their other aunt and her hubby. I did manage to finally get Mike to try some games, teaching him Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, and he really liked TTR. I know because he interrupted Jeff's piano recital later to tell me he'd figured out what his mistake in the game was and how he'd fix it next time and beat me. Yeah, admit it, you liked that game! And after a lot of too-rich food and a lot of one-handed piano playing, we're home. Just in time for Packers v Dr Who. Wait...

Euroquest Complete

Home now from Euroquest, four days of games and serious humbling and social graces or not, as the case sometimes was. Besides the Can't Stop and Lost Cities wins Friday, I won exactly one game - a Stone Age match Friday afternoon. That was it for me and winning. After Thursday, I couldn't win a Wild Card game for anything and after Friday I couldn't win, period. I somehow squeaked into the Stone Age semi-final (I was ranked 16th and they took 16 players) and finished 3rd in that, for a 12th place finish overall. I didn't beat 25th or so in anything else, and that finish was in Ra, which I played solely to kill time. I was absolutely destroyed in Ticket to Ride & Dominion. Good thing there were no crows around and my ego isn't invested in winning.

Meanwhile, I met up with old friends and made many new friends, including one who came to EQ from Romania. Yes, Romania. Of course, she also wiped the walls with me at every game, but we had fun. (There was also an attendee who came from Israel to play. I'm not sure but they're crazy...) Taught a few games to people, including some of the younger set, and hopefully convinced some folks to join in with the GCOM fun. Of course, had to deal with one obnoxious yo-yo all weekend including consecutive games on Friday, which left me unsuccessfully begging the GameMaster to please put this jerk at another table, I already spent two hours trying not to strangle him. Apparently there was a lot of 'please don't make me play with Jason' going around the whole room. I behaved financially, eating economically (Subway/McDs/7-11) and buying a whopping two items, a Christmas present for Jack and one item for myself. Shouldn't have done that, but darn it, I need some level of treat.

Tomorrow I get to work on the expensive requirements the class just dropped on me (background check I have to pay them for, a tetanus shot and a copy of my high school diploma) plus an MRI on the much-pained shoulder and the class itself. But tonight, yes, it is: Sunday Night Football, Ravens at Steeler. Oh yes.

LET'S GO RAVENS!!!!!!

Made It. Barely.

The weather sucked. There is flooding all over the area, again, although interestingly the area around work wasn't bad. Usually we're the first to flood. It was nasty near home, though, and gaming was full of horror stories about closed roads and horrible backups. (Took us all of 5 minutes longer than usual. I kept my yap shut.) The scanner, one day short of its warranty expiring, decided to expire itself. Canon's tech guy gave several suggestions, and they worked. For three hours. Then right back to non-working. I think the thing has given up the ghost. Spent the entire afternoon poring through file names and numbers and could barely see straight by the time 5 rolled around. Was barely awake for the games, although I somehow managed to cook my banana bread for the gang correctly and lay a smackdown on four guys at Ticket to Ride. We're talking 75 points ahead of the 2nd place finisher. Now home and ready to drag myself to bed, hopefully to sleep for 12 hours.

Gamers Go Mainstream

CBS Sunday Morning did a piece on board games, including a bunch of my faves on the show (Settlers, Ticket, Carcassonne). Gaming has gone legit :)

Quick Post

Because I really ought to be in bed right now, so computer, football & funerals should wait until tomorrow. I will quickly say, while I still remember, that gaming went surprisingly well, as I won Endeavor & Zooloretto for the first times, 2nd at TTR and Jeff & I won Shadow Hunters despite me not actually knowing how to play it.

Have to work tomorrow...on a holiday...so hopefully will have time to more fully expound upon things. If the hand allows, of course.

Games, Live & Televised

I seem to have done reasonably well fantasy-wise, as I went 3 for 4 and I'm pretty sure no one outside Seattle picked that game right. The Ravens snapped out of their recent funk halfway through the game and turned it into a laugher. Meanwhile, Michael Vick goes home. Can't complaint about that outcome. On the other hand, the Ravens now get the Squealers - yippee - and the game will be starting while I'm at Dave's funeral. Swell.

Watched most of the football from Alphabet Soup, where I played my worst game of TTR ever (I refused to let them score me, as I was in negatives) and finally learned Alhambra (8 months after I asked to learn it) and Ra - Dice. Those games seem to have some possibilities. And with the Ravens on Saturday, I'm clear to game Sunday without distractions.

Wrap Up

Just barely made it there in time to set up Settlers this morning, wound up playing with one hand and eating with the other. The Settlers game was super, 3 of us were both playing cutthroat and trading the lead among ourselves, and not taking anything personally. We all had 9 points when one guy managed to wrest longest road from me for the win. That eliminated me from any more Settlers competition. Then to Ticket, where I played a perfect game of Europe, finishing all tickets and more than anyone else - and finished dead last, eliminating me from TTR. Then I lost another Settlers game to a 5 year old. I thought it might be time to call it a convention then!

Got home just after the 1st quarter of the Ravens/Dolphins game and was able to chase the game on the DVR, plus it was a pretty enjoyable game outside of the FG shenanigans. Then the first grocery shopping since before Mom's surgery, and I've been trying to plow through the DVR since.

Two things I noticed when I got home about the games I bought: 3 of the 4 games were designed by Reiner Knizia. I knew Ingenious was, I didn't realize Circus Flocati & Lost Cities were until I de-shrinkwrapped them. I imagine I should be seeking out his games in that case. His mind seems to work the same direction as mine. The fourth game, Endeavor...it looked fine when I bought it, and I took it straight to the car, where it lived in the trunk with the other games for 3 days. Today I took the game apart and found numerous dings and dents, a crushed exterior corner and a split interior corner. It must have taken abuse in the trunk, but none of the other games had any damage. I'm stumped.

But Not Thirds

Yesterday I lost Stone Age by 2 points. Today I lost by...1 point. And the player who beat me today is the only one to beat my friend Henry all weekend. But then, in the semi-final, I was put in a group with my friend Eugene, who is the asst GM of Stone Age and the best player I've ever seen at the game. So I was toast, and finished 3rd behind Eugene and a nitwit who apparently entered the tournament to get more quality time with his Blackberry. Sheesh. Another 2nd in Settlers and another one in TTR Europe to round out the tourney. Also got waxed in Lost Cities and scraped out a 3rd in Endeavor in the informal tourney, and concluded the day by thoroughly bolloxing an attempt at a new game, 4 Monkeys. Probably a good one for  some people, but apparently not me.

Also had adventures with Mom, whose car was dead this morning and she couldn't remember what to do about such things; fortunately she called during the only few minutes I wasn't in the signal-challenged ballroom but rather picking up lunch. I walked her through using AAA and they took care of the car, phew.

Last but not least, another second, but not mine. I watched the race. OH, so close! I do think Zenyatta is one impressive horse, although I'm not as sold on her as some - she never raced on turf and except for the Breeders Cup, never outside California or against the boys. Basically, 17 of her 20 races were against mediocre competition. So, a great horse, but not the greatest ever. Would have been something if she'd pulled it off though.

Seconds

As in, second in Ticket to Ride (lost by 4 points), second in Stone Age (lost by 2 points), second in Settlers of Cataan, two seconds in Can't Stop and a second in a new game, Isla Dorada. I seem to have had a wee bit of a pattern today. Losing TTR stung, but the others were plusses. Also learned 3 4 new games (bought one; entered a drawing for one; would like to never see the 3rd and 4th ones again) and picked up a couple more games along the way. It's hard trying to get wild card games going though, everyone's in a tournament and you have to try to catch everyone at exactly the right time (yes, I'm also an offender.) Generally, though, having a good time :)

Finally, A Break

The 'going to the gym' part of my break didn't go so hot - my shoulder and back were both killing me and I was miserable after just 10 minutes on the bike - but the gaming part of the program was better. I was the first person there by a substantial margin, so I helped with setting up. Which for me was feeding the guinea pigs :)  Only played a few games and lost all of them, although I lost Ticket to Ride by 1 point. There is a board game based on the Constitutional Convention now. Yes, you too can decide which delegates are Federalists and which ones are anti-Federalists and vote on Articles to the Constitution. I didn't finish last, thanks to my hero Benjamin Franklin giving me a points blitz in the last round, but still I was 4th of 5.

But mostly it was a change of scenery from home/work and a break from Mom, so a big help. Now a little football before bed.

Post Game

Very tired and sore this morning. Surprise. Managed to make it down to Soup for a while, ran the table at Ticket to Ride, lost Qwirkle & Settlers, and then left early due to too woozy to keep thinking. But mostly just worked on clearing out the rest of the car (only the microwave is left) and catching up on papers and such. Also pricing some items I brought back, collectibles are easier to sell in a big city than the middle of nowhere so I have been assigned that duty. Premium clock oil, a WWII vintage bayonet and two Meerschaum pipes. Let the hunt begin...

Back From Soup...

And feeling very fortunate. One of my fellow Soupers, who had parked about 30 feet away from my car, had his car broken into during Soup. It's not a particularly new or expensive car and he had nothing in it, which really made me worry about my poor little car, but no, Baby Blue was left alone. Close call. And one of the few times I'm glad I haven't gotten around to cleaning up the back seat. Dog hair does make a car less appealing to a thief, I would think.

Indoors, I learned Puerto Rico and didn't finish last; and nearly lapped the other players at Ticket to Ride: Europe. The tickets just fell my way, as it were. Successfully made banana bread for the event and it was well-received. Now to putter about a bit before bed.

Winding Down

Finishing a long day of gaming, both watching and playing.

Watched the World Cup for the first time this morning, seeing most of the Germany/Argentina white-washing. Most of the game was simply wondering if Argentina would show up at all...they didn't. Bummed about Muller getting the boot for the next game though, 'cause he's kinda gorgeous. If all soccer players looked like that I'd be watching fulltime...but I digress. Also tried, once again, to teach Mom to play Ticket to Ride online. Failed again, too, and lost every game in the process.

Then to the final GCOM session in Hillendale. The hosts have determined their house is just too small and hectic to continue as hosts, so this was the last gaming session there. Learned a few new games, including 'Aquaretto', which was notable because I learned the expansion game when I've never played the original. Then to more the usual games, including more Ticket, which I won.

And now home once more.
