Well...

My supervisor spent much of last night and today trying to e-mail her husband's documents to herself, without success. I suggested plugging the Kindle into a computer through the USB port and transferring them that way; she said she didn't have the right cord for that. Meanwhile, she couldn't get a Wi-fi signal at the office or at the restaurant across the street. She finally gave up and told me to give it a shot (I'd been offering to do that all week). She thought it needed to be deregistered and reregistered to her, so that's what I did first. And all of her hubby's docs disappeared. Yikes! So I called Amazon help. They like me. I had both CSRs cracking up. Anyway, they suggested deregistering her and restarting the gadget. Worked like a charm; his docs were back. Then came the fun part of trying to transfer them. The CSR thought she could find them in the cloud, but they were never Amazon docs, they were proprietary to the seminar he went to. I suggested buying a cord and transferring them to my computer; they said the docs wouldn't work on the computer because they were in Kindle format, but that there was a USB cord built into the power cord. I had no idea. Nifty! So I plugged it into the computer directly and...turns out the documents were all .pdfs. Moved all of them onto a thumb drive to give to supervisor tomorrow. Meanwhile, I loaded up the newly me registered Kindle with classic authors for Mom (who will be the primary user) and sent her off to read Mark Twain. The case and light should be here next week. Phew.

We have Kindle!

Just finished an hour with the new compie. My music drive wasn't being read by the computer. Seems it can't read the presence of the drive if it's plugged into a hub or a USB port on the back of the computer, but it's happy to read it if it's plugged into a front USB port. THis makes no sense.

Meanwhile, my finger is killing me, even with - or perhaps because of - the splint. I guess I'm having surgery on it.

The work compie was acting up all day until it completely crashed. Seems it had a malware issue of unknown origin. After multiple scans, we still haven't found the culprit. Couldn't get much done this afternoon and had an ticked off office manager as a result.

Go to the gym. The FitLinxx system hasn't recorded my last couple of workouts, it wouldn't register today's, and I had a time getting it to take manual entries.

Come home. The new compie is generally decent, WAY faster than the old one, but it's objecting to a couple of the external drives for unknown reasons (they were fine this morning), it doesn't want to import my internet favorites, it accepts the wireless keyboard but not the wireless mouse, and while Norton told me last spring I can install it on 3 computers, now it's saying just one and therefore, not the new one.

I hate technology.

Best Buy was very quick and easy on switching, as it turned out. However, I now have the last model of the computer so I sure hope this one works.

Saving it for tomorrow, though, my back is killing me and, pending the incoming ice storm, I may need something to do tomorrow...

Went to the World of Pets Expo today, and ran myself into the ground before I even finished the Expo section. Ran my camera's batteries into the ground as well. So many critters, so little time! Had to pass on most of the dogs that were visiting and stuck with non-canines and program dogs. Got to meet Bill and Star from America's Greatest Dog, the only reality program I have ever watched. Bill was just like he was on the show. Star, who must be 11-12 years old now, was mostly very quiet and half awake. I gave her a very thorough scratching. Also held a parrot and a ferret, was nearly eaten by a miniature horse, etc. I'll try to get photos up later, I don't have a photo program on the netbook (didn't realize that until now) and the old, failing computer is now disconnected.

Which leads to the less pleasant part. I managed to re-organize all the wires and doodads around the computer, with the only real issues being not finding an appropos power cord for an old external and the printer Mike & Janine gave me is too big to fit in the computer furniture. Then I plugged in the new computer. First it failed to boot in any way shape or form. I wondered, and unplugged the additional internal drive I installed yesterday. That was the problem, and the computer booted up. Great, right? Wrong. It booted fine, but Windows wouldn't start up. It starts setup, decided it couldn't do it and restarted the computer. Over and over and over... Trying to open in safe mode changed nothing. I went to the ASUS site, explained the problem, and it said to re-install WIndows. Problem is, Windows came pre-installed and thus I don't have the program to re-install with. Gah. And I really don't want to have to haul it back to Best Buy. Blecch.

Everything Mom tried to do this week was cancelled due to the weather, so I hauled her out with me to a new gaming night, near us on Fridays. She got through the games better than we'd hoped, inc. "The Simpsons: Clue', which isn't exactly standard fare at gaming. The owner of the Simpsons games was tickled to get to play them for a change. Everyone was having a blast and a lot of laughs, and the hosts couldn't have picked better food for Mom if I'd sent them an advance menu. Might be able to get her to go back, fingers crossed.

Then today I finally got back to the gym, did the grocery shopping, renewed prescriptions, picked up some new computer doodads for the new computer, unboxed the new compie and installed said doodads, and did some windup work on the old computer. TV time now, phew.

On Saturday, Mom and I shopped computers. I checked out the ASUS CM5675-09 that I linked to here the other day, and concluded I wanted it. With at least 3 of them in box at the local Best Buy, I figured I had time to run the computer past the tech experts at gaming. Sunday I printed out the specs from the Best Buy site and took them to gaming. The techies approved of the computer. We decided we'd go pick one up tonight (Tuesday).

Today I check the Best Buy web site. The computer is no longer listed, anywhere on the site. I called the store. They say they don't carry it. I say you had 3 of them there Saturday. They say the computers say they don't have any. And only Best Buy carried this computer. It hasn't turned up in the Outlet or Clearance centers. I'm considering going to the store tonight anyway, in case one of them is still sitting under the ASUS display, but criminy they do see me coming. And offhand I'm not seeing another computer I liked anywhere near as much. Dammit.

ETA - we went to Best Buy anyway - they did still have 2 of the computers in the store and we bought one hastily. Hopefully I can set it up this weekend.

Started off the weekend with Dave's funeral. Definitely not your usual service: the guess-timated attendance was 600. The church was huge, but still not big enough as the service itself was standing room only, folks squeezed into every corner and the start delayed half an hour so everyone could park and squeeze in. (Arriving early, Bryce and I parked 2 1/2 blocks away and sat in the next to last pew.) Then we had an assortment of music, including bluegrass, Irish, Hawaiian and church traditionals. Then there was a jam session in the church's social hall. We were packed in tight between the high attendance and the truly spectacular spread. Not sure I've ever seen so much food in one place before, but table after table with assortments of repasts plus another 3 tables of desserts. Conversely, one small drink table. They did forget something! We were surprised by both the amazing attendance and how few people there we knew; we were the only people there from Roots Cafe, as far as we could tell, and most of the bands we knew had just one member attending. But still, what a turnout. Dave had quite the following.

Funerals plural, because Sunday I found out my sister-in-law's grandfather, with whom we've shared Thanksgiving the last six years, passed suddenly on Friday. His funeral is tomorrow. Two funerals in 4 days. (I suspect Art's funeral will be a bit smaller than Dave's.)

Football - I think going straight from Dave's service to the Ravens game tempered my mood just enough to keep me merely disappointed by the results, instead of devastated. There's a lot of devastated going around town these days, so in that regard I'm fortunate. The Ravens were also the only game I didn't correctly pick. Perhaps my pick'em touch is back.

Last but not least, computer follies. So the motherboard is dying and with it, the computer. It took much of the weekend but I was finally able to convince Mom that we do have to replace the computer, and she's willing to foot that bill if I pay for all accessories/needed software. (She may be getting the better end of the deal.) I searched about on the net and found what seemed to me to be a good computer at a decent price - this Gateway model ). I ran it up the flagpole past the same computer folks who deemed the motherboard failing. Half of them insisted I should get a Mac. Uh, guys, work & netbook computers are PCs, all software is PC, Mom can barely handle the familiar stuff. Not the time to make that big a move. The only opinion offered about the Gateway was negative, and that guy suggested ASUS. My netbook is ASUS and I'm quite fond of it, so I went back to the board. Best I could come up with was this ASUS model ), not quite the RAM or rating of the Gateway but comparably priced. So now I'm torn between these two computers, or possibly a door number 3. I definitely want to try to get ahead of the curve for a change, a quad core processor, lots of RAM & hard drive, etc in the hopes I can get 4-5 years out of a computer, but I doubt I can get Mom past $700, if that far. Any suggestions are welcome.

Back to (holiday level) work. That is, nearly none.

Because I really ought to be in bed right now, so computer, football & funerals should wait until tomorrow. I will quickly say, while I still remember, that gaming went surprisingly well, as I won Endeavor & Zooloretto for the first times, 2nd at TTR and Jeff & I won Shadow Hunters despite me not actually knowing how to play it.

Have to work tomorrow...on a holiday...so hopefully will have time to more fully expound upon things. If the hand allows, of course.

Busy, busy days for tired, tired me. I hate shovelling snow. I hate neighbors who shovel their snow at 2am. I've about had it with all these debtors who are convinced they have a consitutional right to not make their car payments, but can still keep the car. I made it to gaming last night, where the professional computer types conferred and concluded that my computer's motherboard is failing. Not surprised but didn't really want to hear that, either. I do want my mother to just let me pay the bills already, as she's a disaster in progress when it comes to her checkbook and the bills (she didn't pay the phone/cable bill for several months; I got that fixed hours before we would have been cut off.)

And now I find I'm not a Sagittarius after all. (Those who have experienced my stubborness will beg to differ with the astrologers on this point.) Evidently I am in fact a Scorpio. Whoopee.

Yep, the computer was fine when I went to bed last night. This morning, nothing would wake it. I'm not sure whether it has rejected the PS/2 mouse and keyboard (after rejecting the wireless set) and thus is receiving no input to wake it, or if the monitor is not working, as I couldn't get a response from that either. Unplugging both had no effect, and I had to get to work. Borrowing a monitor from the office to test that aspect, and I'll try the netbook's mouse. But I get a bad feeling I'll have to get another computer, and the money just isn't there for that. Fortunately, all of my content is backed up, so if the computer is completely toast now I'll only lose downloaded software. Eesh.

ETA The work monitor had no luck either. I unplugged everything for several minutes and tried again - this time the work monitor did give me a screen. So I tried to back up the downloaded software. Halfway through, the entire computer shut down and restarted of its own accord. I'm of a mind the computer is dying.

The darn thing is driving me nuts. First the wireless keyboard & mouse stopped working. I've tried every suggestion I found online (changing batteries, reinstalling software, unplugging, rebooting computer, etc) and they just plain won't work. If it were one or the other I'd think it was the gadget, but both?

Then Mom's favorite software died. It just goes into thinking mode and not even Task Manager can shut it off; I have to shut off the computer entirely to stop it. I tried reinstalling that and the same thing happened.

So I spent the last couple hours trying to fix all this (defrag, spyware scan, virus scan, malware scan, empty recycle bin, et al) and neither of them are responding. These are both programs that worked one moment and died the next for no apparent reason. Gag. And in my attempts to fix them, my backup drive and ITunes library both disappeared.

Really aggravated...
