I thought this afternoon's errands/shopping trip would take several hours. It took 90 minutes, if that.

I'm trying to get my mother's wedding & engagement rings appraised, since she has no further use for them & I'm in a bad way financially. (Used the last of my unemployment benefits today; I have $20 some cash left.) So far I've been told $1500, $300, & we only do that one day a month. Today I was told 'pay us $30 first'. If I *had* $30 I wouldn't be trying to sell the damn rings, people. Guess I better get over to the first store tomorrow.

Then I went job shopping in a shopping center. The new place is still under construction; manager says they haven't even begun thinking about hiring yet. Every other place in the shopping center - 5 of them - is a chain store requiring online job applications. I've filled out a bunch of those for a variety of businesses; I get an acknowledgement that I applied & never hear another word again. Has anyone ever gotten a job this way? Because they won't even acknowledge reading it. Maybe they just see I have a college degree & immediately trash my application. But in any event, I'm not sure it's worth the hour per application it takes to never hear from these places again.

Finally, I went grocery shopping (hence the last of the money). What I really wanted was on huge sale, but perishable, & I won't be home the next couple of days. So I just got what I had to get, plus ice cream, my one pleasure in life now. But in the meantime, what is a greater sign that the apocalypse is upon us - Star Wars-themed coffee creamer? Or Christmas flavors before Labor Day? Either way, I'm mortified.

Oh, and it's 95 degrees and humid. Yuck.

Well, whaddya know - we have a white Christmas. Can't remember the last time that happened, but almost an inch of snow fell today, just enough to touch up everything. Nice. Unfortunately it also touched up the roads, a friend didn't even try to come after she barely made it home, and the family was late.

I've got a decent haul: the Kindle, of course; series 2 of 'Luther'; Dr Who's 'Christmas Carol' special; Cards Against Humanity; a party game called 'Martini Time', how appropriate; some books and some accessories for the Kindle. Promptly spent time playing backgammon with No. 1 nephew on the Kindle. Mom's haul included a book written by a certain meerkat-ish author (thanks for the signed nameplate, she loves it!) and a ton of Keurig-related things to include the machine itself. I don't drink much coffee, so I've never been inclined to invest in one; but the family is crazy for theirs and felt Mom should have one. Fortunately they did include a lot of tea for Mom and cider & chai for me. The boys were very happy with their games (Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride USA, and various card and Star Wars games), Janine loved the necklace & earrings and Mike is intrigued by his annual sampler CD.

The dinner was crazed; we did the usual pickup of a complete dinner at Safeway, but for some reason half the stuff was frozen solid. The turkey's juice overran the pan and caught fire in the oven, fortunately just smoke. The mashed potatoes needed over twice the recommended time to cook because they were an ice cube, and Mom forgot the vegetables until after everything else was cooked, so by the time the veggies were ready most things were cold :/  But it was a darn good turkey and mashed potatoes, and I suspect we'll be eating it all week.

Phew. Need bedtime. After I let out the hysterical dog.

Was just watching 'Necessary Roughness' and at one point, TK refers to Nico as 'my personal Darth Vader'. Good line, nice concept. We could all use a personal Darth Vader. A personal Han Solo might be useful, too, but we'll start with the Darth Vader.

As I have HBO free for the time being, I’ve been indulging in their documentary offerings. And there’s a lot of them. I’ve watched most of this summer’s offerings and a few that have been rerun from last year/earlier this year, and I’ll take a swing at short-reviewing them. They are behind a cut, not because of spoilers (this is non-fiction; either we already know the end, or it isn’t over) but for length.

To infinity and beyond! )

I honestly can't remember the last time I set foot in a shopping mall. And I'm sure when I did, it was a local mall where the eyeglass shop was open on holidays and thus able to repair my frames on Thanksgiving. I really don't like malls.

But today I went. I was instructed that what my younger nephew Jeff really, really wanted for his birthday was Star Wars Legos. Except his mother has no idea which ones he does or doesn't have, and I only had a week to come up with something. My PT rescued me by suggesting 'The Lego Shop' at Arundel Mills. I had no idea there was such a thing. So after a few laps around the mall (theappropriate  entrance number was obscured, so I went right past it) I found the right section and found the store. Packed tight with under-10s. The clerk asked if I wanted to join the 'Lego Club', I told him I hadn't been in a mall in over 5 years. He put me down as a 'no'.

But in any event I now have a Tri-Fighter or something or other, with a gift receipt just in case. The kid better like it - I went to a mall for him!

Yes, it's true. I saw a movie in a theatre today. We saw 'Tangled'. Bizarrely loud, but cute and amusing. Loved the horse, of course, esp when he did the dog imitation. Then we went to lunch at a Chinese restaurant, naturally, seems the place next to the gym just added sushi. Yum yum time. Then when we go home, we watched 'Horton Hears A Who', finished season 1 of Glee, saw some bits of the original Star Wars trilogy (must have been a while since I've seen it, as I didn't remember a lot of it) and now it's the Dr Who Christmas special. Whole lotta relaxing going on, just in time for snow. Yay.

The family is going to Maine for Christmas, so they came down to our place today to have our traditional Christmas Eve...on Dec 18th. It was wacky, as both boys were smart-alecky/cranky and Mom got half her gifts erroneously tagged, and I took over full responsibility for the stockings this year. Naturally, the boys were unhappy with the last two, fighting over the gifts and complaining because I gave them traditional Christmas oranges in the stockings. But I stocked them up with Star Wars stuff so after a while they got over it. There were no surprises amongst the adults - I now have the complete '10 Days In..." game series, the last season of Lost, the first season of In Plain Sight, the Jayhawks' first and long out-of-print first album, the new Fitz & the Tantrums CD, and playing card holders, which hopefully will ease things for my hands somewhat. Mom received a whole bunch of blankets, warm socks, jackets, flannel PJs, etc so she should be well-insulated this winter. We had dinner created for us by Safeway and we needed only to heat everything; everything was good to very good, and the turkey was terrific, so success on that count.

And now, we're pooped.

I have been to a whopping 2 baseball games this year. Down from 106 five years ago. So last weekend I decided that, darn it, I'm going to a game Saturday. Erm...the forecast for tomorrow is for 100 degrees, high humidity and a heat index of 106. Ah yes, also 'Code Orange' air quality, meaning don't spend significant time outdoors.

But that's not even why I'm backing out of tomorrow's game in Bowie. Somewhere along the line, someone wasn't paying attention, and tomorrow's game is double-booked, promotion wise. It's Star Wars Night, which might be amusing were the costumed characters not dying of heat stroke. It's also Christian Faith Night. Yes, at the same time. I will stay home, oh yes.

After a hellish time trying to get out of the house (which included smashing my head into a kitchen cabinet), I managed to go to the wrong hotel. Then I discovered, after I was there, that there were no concessions at said hotel. You bring you own (which I hadn't) or go to Chili's. Not a big Chili's fan. But at least I got a big, caffeine laden soda out of it.

Also failed to play much, with most folks opting for the 3+ hour mega games and/or preoccupied with the silent auction. I had a list of things I wanted to bid on; 2 didn't make it to the auction, and all but one of the others were also targeted by BSFS, so I didn't want to bid against them. Since I play their game sets at Alphabet Soup, it is to an extent bidding against myself. And I was sniped on the one non-Hal Haag game, a Star Wars game I thought the nephews would love. Final tally? Qwirkle. That was it. Did snag some GCOM swag, pretty purple dice and assorted accessories, and I'm picking up the original Settlers of Cataan tomorrow, but in the end I didn't spend nearly what I expected and my hands are much emptier than I thought.

Did at least get to wrap up the evening by finally playing some games I like (Ticket to Ride & Stone Age) with people I knew. I think that one day of Game Days may well be plenty for me, but we'll see how I feel next year.

Well, failed to reconcile the Vista vs ITunes situation, but at least I managed to convince ITunes to rip CDs again. Slowly but surely, my music collection goes digital. I was able to update my website for a change, and even posted the one new piece of art I've done in the last few months that worked out. That would be Pushing Daisies' Emerson Cod - usually I either go quick and use pencils, or do reverse drawing (white on black) but given the emphasis on color in 'Daisies' I decided to do Emerson in full color. So here goes my first attempt at a cut, Emerson's bottom right:
I screwed up the BSG tape, so I'll try again with the new ep today, I taped it again last night. Finally saw Revenge of the Sith for the first time. Yikes, but someone needs to not let Lucas write/direct. Better than 1 & 2, at least. Meanwhile I have got to stop watching the Capitals - they're terrible when I'm watching, but (apparently) quite good when I'm not.

The dog show was all right - they had something called 'Meet the Breeds', which rocked. 4-5 dogs of different breeds were in a small area and you just walked right in, met the dogs and talked to their owners. Lots of fun for everyone, good for photo-taking, just a great idea. And we found some orthopedic shoes that Mom is just loving, she'd better love 'em for $70 (I paid). But the place was so huge we really couldn't take in the whole thing, and the first people we met weren't very nice, so it cast a pall on the day. My run-in was with a woman who had a total hissy fit because I had a camera with me in the general vicinity of her and her dog. She felt I was there to photograph her dog, put the pic on the web and claim I owned the dog.(!) There's paranoid, and then there's her. Rule refresher: spectators are encouraged to bring cameras and take photos. And there's pros taking photos all over the place. Get used to it. Afterwards the restaurant we were going to turned out to be not open yet, but we found a nice Irish pub and had burgers while sitting on a couch watching rugby. Very cool.
