After a hellish time trying to get out of the house (which included smashing my head into a kitchen cabinet), I managed to go to the wrong hotel. Then I discovered, after I was there, that there were no concessions at said hotel. You bring you own (which I hadn't) or go to Chili's. Not a big Chili's fan. But at least I got a big, caffeine laden soda out of it.

Also failed to play much, with most folks opting for the 3+ hour mega games and/or preoccupied with the silent auction. I had a list of things I wanted to bid on; 2 didn't make it to the auction, and all but one of the others were also targeted by BSFS, so I didn't want to bid against them. Since I play their game sets at Alphabet Soup, it is to an extent bidding against myself. And I was sniped on the one non-Hal Haag game, a Star Wars game I thought the nephews would love. Final tally? Qwirkle. That was it. Did snag some GCOM swag, pretty purple dice and assorted accessories, and I'm picking up the original Settlers of Cataan tomorrow, but in the end I didn't spend nearly what I expected and my hands are much emptier than I thought.

Did at least get to wrap up the evening by finally playing some games I like (Ticket to Ride & Stone Age) with people I knew. I think that one day of Game Days may well be plenty for me, but we'll see how I feel next year.

For what I fear may be only a brief, fleeting moment (I had internet access yesterday for a whopping 15 minutes), the GMOC memorial for Hal Haag was a nice one. Tons of food, around 100 people at its peak, an amusing slide show and some heartfelt testimonials to the greatness of Hal. And a lot of games. All wakes should be this pleasant. I think Hal would have approved :)

Constant applications of ice seem to be helping my heel, well, heal. Fingers crossed. My hand seems past helping and I can't get a doctors apptmt until mid-September.

I wuv my Ravens. After last night, I think Mark Sanchez may be reconsidering his career choice, after the Ravens' D made him look rather silly. This will be a good season, methinks.

Back to work.

Not off to a great start today, again. Combining the shock of Hal's death with several brief but intense thunderstorms and an upset tummy kept me from sleeping at all last night. And my hand and foot are most painful this morning. Thursdays are never fun; this one will really suck.

It took a lot of poking and prodding from Balticon gamemaster and 2010 Fan Guest of Honor Hal Haag to finally get me to go to an open games session at the Baltimore SciFi Society's clubhouse. I went Sunday. Had fun. Hal groused about whether he might wind up as the con chair for the 2010 con. We swapped more e-mails Monday and Tuesday. He promised to teach my mother to play Dominion. Appropriate, since he taught me to play.

This morning, Hal died, apparently of a heart attack. He was a great guy, patient with newbies and enthusiastic for all things scifi and gaming, and integral to all the local conventions; I cannot fathom the idea of a con without Hal. I'm really...I don't know what else to say.
