Westminster, Pt 2
Feb. 11th, 2009 09:19 amUpfront: I went to bed around 10, so I don't know which dog won Working or Best in Show, and it wasn't in the paper or on Yahoo this morning, thus I am unspoiled for the moment.
They almost made it. The announcer managed to make it to the 7th & final group before claiming that show dogs are athletes (David Frei blew it on the Doberman.) Conformation show dogs are NOT athletes. They are high-bred, well-trained show animals. Now, if you're talking about dogs that are doing agility, herding, hunting, etc then yes, they're athletes. And many of the dogs do both those types of events and conformation. But at a conformation show, they are pageant entries, not athletes. That drives me crazy.
The other thing I was noticing is that apparently, black is the new black. All black dogs won half of the final slots, when shelters are packed full of black dogs that no one wants. Go figure that. And of course, the poodle gets in. Always the poodles. Sheesh. My choice of the six so far would be the Sussex spaniel. His name is Stump :) He looks like a Stump. And he's 10 years old, but with nary a gray hair, bless his jolly little heart. I hope he wins, although I'd be floored if he did.
