Glee vs Nip/Tuck

So we've been watching Glee from the beginning lately. Mom saw the CBS Sunday Morning segment on Matthew Morrison and wanted to see Glee, and she really likes it. And there's one thing about Glee that I really, really can't wrap my head around.

How in the blazes did Glee and Nip/Tuck both come out of the same mind? 

Ryan Murphy is scary.
