Some Thoughts on Dr Who
Sep. 8th, 2008 10:46 amMind, prior to the 'new' Who, I saw exactly one episode of Dr Who. I found it while channel-surfing past PBS one night at least 10 years ago, and I have no idea how long it had been on before I landed on it; three excuciatingly long hours later, I gave up hope that it would ever end and went to bed. Besides being interminably long, extremely repetitive and arguably sexist, it was boring as hell. I didn't watch again until earlier this year, when I discovered the 'new' Who was actually rather good. After some research, I still don't know what I saw way back when, but I'm almost certain the Doctor was Sylvester McCoy, and it seemed to involve everyone wandering around a factory repeatedly and to no particular purpose.
More to my point, I was reading the Dr Who magazine featuring all of his companions from the new series, and it occurred to me that all three companions (Rose, Martha & Donna) have total shrews for mothers. Martha even has a potentially shrewish stepmother in her father's fiance. None of the mothers are likable; none support their daughters emotionally or professionally; all seem prone to flying off the handle or otherwise losing it; Martha's mother betrayed her to Saxon's people; Jackie slapped the Doctor, etc. I could see if one of the companions had a nasty mother, but all three? Does RTD or one of his upper-level compatriots have serious mother issues, or am I seeing something that isn't there?

I love that!
