tiggerallyn tiggerallyn.livejournal.com/757718.html and came up with the very workable theory that there's a perception filter (ala Torchwood lift) on the pond. I had a different theory about the duck pond, but it doesn't contradict his idea and actually benefits from it.

Leadworth's duck pond has been there for ages and has always had ducks. As long as the residents have been alive, there's been ducks on the pond. My thought was that they are all so used to the ducks on the pond that they can't think of it otherwise, esp. if the ducks only recently disappeared. (Or, as TA has postulated, there's now a perception filter on the pond so the residents can't tell the difference.) My thought is that the ducks, being animals, had a sense of something bad approaching and left the pond to escape it. As the other animals in the town are still there, the bad thing must be using the pond as a point of entry or a residence, hence the ducks want out of there but the other animals aren't as afraid.

Thus, the Doctor needs to find out for certain 1) Why the ducks left, 2) When they left (so as to pinpoint the time of arrival of the bad thing, and 3) what exactly frightened away the duck and set up shop in the pond.

We shall see...
