I told my mother, repeatedly, that I was going to take a break today and go to therapy and a new game session. She forgot. I came home to almost a dozen messages on multiple phones from her and her duty nurse. Seems my mother has decided she hates the rehab (surprise) and she's trying to check herself out of the facility AMA. She told me if I didn't come get her she would call a cab. *head desk* The social worker had told me this morning that the rehab wasn't going well and Mom would need to stay at least 2 weeks, and I'm exhausted, so this was extra alarming. After an hour on the phone with her and the nurse, I think I've got her off the ledge for a few hours. She's still insistent she wants out of the place ASAP; but I can't get out of work tomorrow, and the facility wants to review Mom's care with me before letting her out. I THINK I have until 6pm tomorrow before Mom flips out again. Geez I hope so.

And if she were to come home, what would happen there? I went through this with my Dad, rehab is NOT optional if she wants mobility again.

I wasn't sure if I should suggest this, but given the scenarios you are describing have you considered a medical Power of Attorney? Perhaps not voluntarily?

I do have a medical PoA for her, but that doesn't stop her from calling a cab and leaving :/ I think a lot of the problem here is mismanaged expectations: she went to a seminar for joint replacements, and a lot of the seminar pertained to knees and shoulders, and the info given said 0 to 3 days in rehab, referring to those procedures. So she got upset over the idea of 7-10 days for her hip, and then the rehab started saying 2-4 weeks there, and she flipped out completely. Meanwhile I re-wrecked my shoulder trying to help her stand and sit at the hospital & rehab, I can't imagine what will happen at home. It's a mess.
