I had heard of him but hadn't heard him until I started working at my current job - a much younger co-worker, Brett, had come across him some way or another on the internet. Brett landed tickets to see Burke in Baltimore and was kind enough to loan me some CDs so I knew what he was talking about. They were great, of course, and I've bought the CDs he released in the past decade. What a voice, oh what a voice.
