Went to Curt Motton's memorial service last night. It was an unusual service compared to those I've been to before; for one thing, there were cops. In uniform. 5 or 6 of them. I can't recall ever seeing a uniformed cop at a funeral before, much less a pack of them. And the widow had a receiving line. Her mother-in-law previewed people, then you talked to the widow, and then her sister followed up. Very organized! Very long line too, I was there 10 minutes after the doors opened and I was the 40th person to sign the guestbook. (There was a line for that, too.) So the mother-in-law asks who I am, and I wasn't sure how to phrase it, but I tried 'you know those two portraits Curt gave Marti a few years back?' 'The ones in the office? Yes.' 'I'm the artist'. She flipped. Apparently, Marti has been trying to find my contact info for a few years. (Curt had it, but neither could find it and I hadn't seen him in 3 years or so.) So they were all pleased as punch that I was there and wanted my business card and gushed about the drawings, etc. Marti wants a portrait of Curt with his grandson, so we'll be getting together on that in a few weeks. And here I was apprehensive about going!

The only other person there that I knew, though, was Joe Durham. Joe was one of the last Negro League players and coached in the Orioles' system for just about forever. He was with Frederick for 10 years while I was going to the games weekly, so he remembered me and we chatted a bit. But I didn't know anyone else, and the receiving line was huge, so I went home. It just felt really awkward not knowing many people there. But not nearly as awkward as I was afraid of!

Former Orioles outfielder, coach and scout Curt Motton died today. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-curt-motton-dies-0122,0,3563360.story

Curt scouted for the Orioles for most of the 90s and 00s, but I hadn't seen him the last 3 years or so. But I saw him often at the games and he regularly invited me to sit with him and talk baseball. And whatever else we got to talking about. The man knew his baseball and I learned a lot from him. He was also a great person and I feel privileged to have known him.

I used to draw portraits at the ballpark; Curt loved watching me draw them and commissioned me to do a couple portraits of him in uniform for his wife. This is the one he liked better (his wife liked the circa 1968 one better):

In looking back on 2009, it seems to me to be the year I didn't do anything:

This is really depressing )

This is the depressing list I came up with off the top of my head. Obviously, there is work to be done in 2010. Hoo boy, a lot of work.

Totally against my nature and instincts. But at least, not against every fibre of my being.

Let's go, Phillies.

From last night's Angels/Yankees game. And you know what? I've seen it before. In fact, I posted about it a couple months ago. ) The only difference being my game was a fly ball and this one was a grounder. But here's the thing: the double A umps called the play right. The major league umps? Blew it. Great.

I hate the Yankees.

The last baseball game of the season, Bowie's Fan Appreciation day. The good news is I got a nice fleece blanket for free. The bad news is I got sunburned, didn't win any prizes, did lousy in the autograph department and oh yeah, spent part of the game sitting in front of Roger. Roger had a cowbell. He rang it on command from the two old biddies with him. My ear will be ringing for some time.

Autographs were such a bust...I needed 5 guys from Bowie. One was promoted a couple days ago. One was deactivated to play in an international tournament a couple days ago. One was the starting pitcher. One was 20 minutes late for the team signing session and the line was cut off before I got to him; then he wouldn't sign on the field. (He also played the game like there was somewhere he'd rather be. Swell.) So I got one guy. Sigh. The Baysox did win the game, at least.

Until April, adieu baseball.

Triple This

The other day, I went on about seeing a triple play at the Baysox game. ) . Well, a friend has since pointed out to me that I saw one other triple play. And I can't imagine how I forgot that one, because it was bizarre.

How bizarre? Well, I'll give you the official scoring on this triple play, and let you all theorize as to how the heck this went down. I'll give the answer in a couple days.

This game happened in the late 90s, in Bowie, between the Baysox and the New Britain Rock Cats (they may have been the Hardware City Rock Cats at the time, but based in New Britain regardless.) Bowie turned an 8-2 triple play against the Rock Cats. That is, centerfield to catcher. That's it. That's all. Ponder as you wish.

Tripled Up

Went to the Baysox game tonight, semi-involuntarily. The last time I want to be at a Baysox game is a holiday fireworks game; but they're away the rest of the weekend and the weekend after Shore Leave, so if I don't go now it could be August before I can go again. And the weather is absolutely freakin' perfect. So I went...along with over 10,000 other people. Half of whom wandered in after the game started, and they were still coming in during the 8th inning. Clearly, not there for baseball. I boogied in the 8th inning because no way am I sitting in that parking lot for 2 hours waiting to get out.

But the reason I post is - for the second time, I witnessed a triple play. And it was identical to the first one, which was in 1994, in Harrisburg, and the Senators turned it against Bowie. This time Akron turned it against Bowie. With no outs and men on 1st and 2nd, the batter, Danny Figueroa, tried to bunt. (Why he was bunting early in the game when his team had a 2 run lead, I have no idea. The manager needs his head checked.) Both runners were going in anticipation of the bunt. Figueroa popped it up to the pitcher. The pitcher throws to the shortstop covering second (that one was close) and the shortstop goes to first (not close - the runner was the catcher, and I could probably outrun him). 1-6-3 triple play. Not exactly an everyday thing. I almost saw a triple play one other time - in the ninth inning in Hagerstown, I went to the parking lot to drop off a few things I didn't want to carry after the game. While I was there, the Suns turned a 5-4-3 against Delmarva. Dangit. Still, seeing one at all - very rare.

Just home from the Keys game - 79 at gametime and gloriously sunny. Waiting until today - right decision. Didn't pick up enough sun get myself back in sorts, but it was a good start. Also managed to get both CJ AND Roxie bathed, and finished another round with the '1000 Recordings' book. Almost done with acquiring the recordings, now I have to listen to them. That...will take a while.

Obviously, I'm not at the ballgame. I checked the weather before I left and they were calling for a 50/50 chance of storms in Frederick. Tomorrow there is a 10% chance of showers. Also 5 degrees cooler. So I'm rolling the dice and going tomorrow instead. Today I just did grocery shopping and was eaten half alive by bugs while throwing Frisbees to CJ. Should've given her a bath too. Maybe tomorrow, if time permits.

Went to Bowie Saturday night not so much for the game (although that was enjoyable as well) but to see several of the surviving members of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Five of them, all in their 80s, came to the game and managed to throw first pitches to the plate. Then they signed autographs and took photos on the concourse the rest of the game.

For one day, at least, it was all about the baseball. It wasn't opening day, but it was Day Two for Frederick and Bowie and the schedule and the weather made a 'do it yourself' doubleheader possible. So I took a bath in SPF 30 sunblock and headed to Frederick.

I left in the 8th again; this time, it was getting cold, plus I had to get up early. When I got home, I summoned up the nerve to look in the mirror, expecting to see a lobster. Nope. No burn at all. A very light tan and that's it. Escaped one disaster!

Yesterday the Baltimore Sun published this article: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/bal-adenhart10408,0,3089213.story

I haven't been posting much, so I figured I'd best pile it all into two posts, one of RL and one of fandom.

My nephews' great-grandmother (or my sister-in-law's grandmother, if you prefer) died last week at age 96. Went to the viewing Monday night, where there were around 8-9 great-grandkids scampering about and another one due in 3 weeks. Packed house, too. She had quite a life.

Seems I had a dentist appointment yesterday. I found out when they called Tuesday to remind me. The day before reminders are an awfully good idea, I must say.

Finally got off my duff and onto Ebay, where I went a little crazy on baseball cards but did all of my shopping for the whole season. I'm strictly Orioles prospects now, so I'll pick up the team sets as they come out and otherwise I'm set. Now to actually drag myself out the door to a game come April...

Finally got the computer room cleaned up. Next up: the bedroom, which I did start with some dusting. It needs more than that. Meanwhile, Mom is threatening to throw out everything in the basement, without asking me. That could be the end of my art business as most of my inventory is down there. I gotta hope she has no followthrough.

Speaking of the end of my business, Michael's turned up on a list of endangered businesses today. And if they go down, so does most of my business; they're the only distributor of the wood planks I use, and not only the distributor but the manufacturer of the Christmas tree ornaments. If Michael's disappears, so does about 2/3ds of Gonzai Gallery. Eep.

It hasn't been a good week for dogs. That evil man in Alabama started his spree by killing his mother's dogs. And then there's this pair. Dog Killing )
Geez, I sure hope they never reproduce. Sick, sick, sick.

Congrats to the Tampa Rays on making the World Series. And extra congrats to anyone now rolling in the dough because they picked the Rays & Phillies for the Series in the pre-season.

I'm not the most popular person at the office this morning, at least amongst the football pool crowd. I'm the only one who had Green Bay and/or St Louis. Only one other person had Baltimore. An easy win for the week for me. Even blind squirrels find nuts, you know.

At the behest of my friend Dan, I watched much of a documentary about Sigur Ros (I hope to finish it at some point this week.) I'm enjoying the music, which is at least partly surprising. But the documentary/visual portion isn't doing it for me. The opposite reaction of what I expected.

I didn't finish Sigur Ros because 'The Great Escape' was on and I've never seen it before. For a POW camp, it looked like quite a livable situation! But I have now greatly increased my pop culture knowledge and saw quite a good flick at the same time. Definitely recommended viewing.

Is the election over yet? Please?

Not all is lost in local sports - for the first time in their 17 seasons (all of which I've attended, often as a season ticket holder) the AA Eastern League's Bowie Baysox have won their division! They clinched first place last night, and will go to the playoffs for the first time since '97 on Wednesday.

More cool beans - Baysox personnel were named the EL's Pitcher of the Year, MVP, and Manager of the Year, and three of them were named to the year-end All-Star Team.

The only negative is that I only attended 7 games this year, when in the past I've been to as many as 60, and none on the road, when I've seen the Baysox play in every EL stadium. Maybe me staying away was the key to their success?

As there was a rare rain-free forecast for the weekend (and surprisingly mild temps for August in Maryland) I overdid on the baseball. And the driving. 400 miles in one weekend is a bit rough on sore back and shoulders, plus I found a few new muscles to be all achy. But the weather was peachy and for the most part the autographs were plentiful.

Having plenty of trepidation about crossing the Bay Bridge, esp now that there's a big hole in the retaining wall, I decided to go to the Delmarva Shorebirds game by going north, then taking back roads through the Eastern Shore and Delaware to Salisbury. This led to adventures, including a bridge almost as scary as the Nice Bridge, directional challenges, etc. but mostly it was a rare venture through a part of the world that's still very rural. Some thoughts (and if you live in a rural area, you may take offense, read at your own risk):
