Things didn't improve after Friday. Turns out Hectic Red played their 25th anniversary gig Saturday. I didn't find out until that day...and I was too worn out and too broke to go. CJ did well in training Saturday, but I can't take her to either of the following classes, and she did more damage to her crate Sunday - in fact, there is a piece of crate she broke off and I can't even figure out where it came from. Went to Alphabet Soup with Dave on Sunday, but we arrived to find our fellow gamers on the sidewalk listening to the security alarm squawk. No idea how long it had been going off, but well before any of us got there. The person with the key was late and unreachable, but finally showed up. Missed part of the Ravens game as a result, and then my fave Raves both went down for the season. (I was also 2-11 at fantasy football.) My back and neck are killing me, I haven't been able to eat and I'm pretty sure I have both an ulcer and an infection. And then there was Mom. She flatly refused to go back to the day center and my brother and his wife backed her on it. She lost her wallet; she threw out a lot of the paperwork I had for her. I still have to take her to the doctor and the lawyer this week, and babysit the nephews. I don't see this week being any better than the weekend.

I have failed once more. Every month, Hectic Red has one gig. Always on a Saturday. Usually on a Saturday I have free and at a bar not far from me. Every month, I decide I'm going this time, darn it. Every month, I don't go.

Did it again tonight. And they couldn't be playing any closer, less than a mile away. In my defense, I at least have a couple of semi-reasons for not going tonight - it's starting to sleet, my knees have been absolutely killing me all day and I'm so wiped I wouldn't stay awake through a set. Most of the time I just don't feel like it, tonight at least I feel like crap. But still, fail.

Hectic Red is playing one of their increasingly rare gigs 2 miles from my house. I have many friends both in the band and following them who I'd love to see and rarely get to. My lone obligation for the weekend is CJ's class tomorrow. Smoking is banned in bars now, so I'll be able to breathe and not need a shower and laundry when I come home. I don't have to get up in the morning.

And I don't wanna go. If I leave now (we were watching a movie that just ended 10 minutes ago) I'll get there just in time for the first break, not music. It's cold outside. My back, shoulders and knee hurt. I'm tired.

This happens every time. Half of HR's few gigs are far away or on nights when I have something else to be done, but the other half are all in my neighborhood and nothing major on the schedule and I JUST CAN'T DRAG MYSELF OUT THE DAMN DOOR.

GAHHHH!

The good news: it didn't rain all weekend. Sunday, in fact was spectacular. The bad news: I've been going to the Towsontowne Spring Festival for over 20 years and it's never been this disappointing. None of the vendors I intended to buy from attended; my mother asked me to get her an azalea but instead of the usual half dozen plant vendors, there were NONE. The vendors who were there weren't interesting. My artist buddy Connell was moved from his usual spot and placed next to a gyros stand. His art was acquiring a nice coating of grease :/  All of the stages were made into 'beer gardens' - fenced off, ID and admission required. This was new. They were also busily trying to be louder than a Who concert. It was too loud outside the garden, so I wasn't about to pay to go inside and get my eardrums blasted. So no Hectic Red. But at least I got to see the Derby. On the one hand, I was the only one in my Derby pool to pick any horse right - I picked Eight Belles to place. And we know what happened next. I quit watching horse racing 20 years ago because I couldn't take seeing another horse die. I may be finished for good now.

Sunday was absolutely gorgeous. Game time temperature in Bowie: 70. Got plenty of sun (too much on my left foot; knew there was some spot I forgot to sunblock), renewed acquaintances with folks I hadn't seen since last year and in the case of Ryan Keefer, a few years. (An Orioles pitching prospect, Ryan is one of the friendliest people I've ever met in my life, in any walk of life.) Got to hang with my usher buddy, Henry, who has worked for the Baysox every year they've existed. He lets me sit in the box seats regardless of my ticket. He's the man. It was dog day at the park; few humans there, but they all brought their dogs. A 220 lb bull mastiff won biggest dog of the day, smallest was a 2 lb chihuahua puppy. A couple of golden retrievers endeavored to wash all the sunblock off my face. That tickled. Then headed up to the barbeque for more dogs (six of them), two bands and a ton of people to go along with the good food. All in all, a most excellent day.

Got the boss hooked on Day Break, hee hee. Gave him just the first disc last night, he watched one and then had to see all four. And came in this morning looking for the rest, which I happily obliged.

Missed Lost & Supernatural in favor of watching Dr Who tapes, but I did tape them. After tonight I'll have 15 hours of videotapes to watch. I need a DVR. And a day off. I may get yet another Sunday off though, I haven't been to a baseball game in over a month because every Sunday, IT RAINS. And the one Saturday I had free, IT RAINED. And I thought of playing hooky yesterday and going to Bowie's 11:00am game, but IT RAINED. This Sunday, it's supposed TO RAIN. I'm sensing a pattern here. But I should manage to get in the Towson Spring Festival and my fave band, Hectic Red, before the rain starts tomorrow. Sunday's ball game and house concert/barbeque at a friend's place, however, are endangered.

The only thing I know about the Kentucky Derby this year is that a filly is running, Eight Belles. I know which horse I'm betting on!
