So THAT'S The Bug
Oct. 8th, 2009 09:31 amI noted in my vacation report that an odd bug of a type I hadn't seen before was bound and determined to join us in our cabin, and I squished quite a few of them. Well, lo and behold, they are identified:
( The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug )
I didn't notice a particular smell to them, but I did note that CJ didn't try to eat them (usually, bugs are a snack.)

Time to Go Bye-Bye
Sep. 26th, 2009 09:33 pmOne day. One day to vacation! Actually more like 12 hours now, so this is the last you'll hear from me until at least Wednesday. I don't own a laptop/Blackberry/Iphone (when I popped into his office late Thursday, my boss assumed I wanted to borrow an office laptop for the trip. He was surprised I didn't want one.) And the cabin has no computer. So 3 days or so of no computer, no screen, no mouse bliss. Also no arts & crafts, no sketchbook, etc. I want my hand to get a full rest.
Everyone behave while I'm gone! I want a good report when I get back!

Let the Countdown Begin
Sep. 18th, 2009 10:01 amNine days. Nine days until I leave on my mini-vacation. It's not much of a vacation - Mom and CJ are both coming with me, and it's for a whopping 3 days - but it's the first time I've been away from home and not working in 7 or 8 years. Usually if I go away for a few days, it's to a convention and I'm working the art show or dealers room in some capacity. Not this time.
3 days in a cabin in the woods. A hot tub. A spa day. A masseuse coming to the cabin. Early fall colors. Critters outside. NO COMPUTER. Hopefully no phone. Reading (I intend to finally read Dr Who: Quality of Leadership in its entirety). Sitting on a deck. Walking in the woods. I need this. Oh boy, I need this.

More planning
Jul. 20th, 2009 02:05 pmLooks like we're going to Hot Tub Heaven for our little getaway, so on to the next item for planning.
My 40th birthday is looming large ahead. Yikes. I'd thought of going to see Los Lobos at Rams Head, but it's expensive and on a Monday night. I just discovered that not only are the Ravens home on my birthday, they're hosting Indianapolis. Do I go to my first NFL game? That'll be even more expensive, but it's a Sunday afternoon. Or do I do something else entirely? Decisions, decisions...

Vacation selection continues to be a world class pain in the keister. More specifically, a certain maternal unit is a pain in the keister. One day, she wants mountain views. The next day, there has to be water views and river access(?), no compromise. One day, we can bring CJ, the next day, no way. (I may make this I pay the deposit if she comes with, Mom pays the boarding if she doesn't.) We found a couple spots that seem ideal and agreeable, except they're out of our price range. Not far out of our price range, if we shared it with another adult or two, it would be fine, but a bit much on our own. But generally, by the time we settle on a vacation I'll really need one.
I will be doing Sunday Shore Leave and CoE reports, honest. But work needs to lighten up and my hand and shoulders are big owies. (Well, after this morning's PT, the left shoulder isn't bad. But the right and the hand are deadly.)
Meanwhile, I finally got Mom to agree to vacation. She's going camping with Mike and family next weekend, but dagnabbit I need a break and I can't afford it without cost splitting. We have agreed on a cabin in the mountains. That's about it. She wants a Friday night to Sunday morning in Asheville. (WTF? 10+ hours driving and stay for 30 hours?) I want a long weekend, 3-4 days 3-4 hours away. We may have reached tentative agreement on the Virginia Blue Ridge area (Deep Creek is too expensive, WV too far) but she still wants a short weekend and I still want a long one. And I want a secluded place, views unimportant, but she wants spectacular views and keeps nixing my choices in favor of better (and more expensive) views. And we haven't decided if CJ comes or not (Roxie stays with the neighbor, but CJ is untrustworthy with strangers so I feel better about bringing her with us.) A fun weekend of arguing ahead, I foresee.
