Movie Time

Switched to movie mode today, more or less (there was also football involved - much better on fantasy this week, and OUAT - um...what?). It literally took years, but I finally finished watching '2001: A Space Odyssey'. I've tried to watch it before without getting more than a few minutes into section 2. The last several weeks I've been watching 10 minutes here or there. At long last, I finished it today. And boy was it a chore. I didn't get it and I didn't like it (other than the music). But it has been seen.

Meanwhile, believe it or not, this Baltimorean has never seen 'Diner'. Bits here and there, but less than half of it total and never in order. By chance I saw it was on last night (on PBS, of all places) and recorded it. It was thoroughly bleeped, but otherwise legit. Naturally I spent half the movie playing spot the location (the horse farm where Boogie tries to pick up the rider is right by my brother's in-laws place; the Tudor-style building across from the manger is near the office and contains the office's bank.) It was perfectly acceptable as a movie, but not up to the reputation it seems to hold around here. Filming in Baltimore isn't unusual anymore and frankly, 'Diner' is a film for guys. But the music was great, again.

At least, off from the internet, for the most part. I had today off of work (Happy Rosh Hashanah, as applicable) so I took Mom to a Senior Day Center to see what she thought. We were greeted by a dog named Buttercup. I consider that a good sign. Mom thinks it's too expensive, but my brother doesn't, so I'll let him convince her she can afford it. Then lunch at a new sandwich shop, Potbelly's. I think it's a chain. Decent sandwich though, and Mom was happy with hers.

Rest of the day was TV and computer games, as I caught up with nearly everything on the DVR and finally watched last year's 'Whitechapel'. I put that off because series 2 did nothing for me; turns out series 3 was much, much better. I'm taking '2001: A Space Odyssey' a chunk at a time, because I've tried and failed to watch it a few times already. I liked the 'trio' episode of Leverage much more than the rest of this season, and Mom actually liked it, first time in years she's liked the show. Maybe we have our new direction - just let Elliott, Hardison and Parker be the show. Fine with me. I enjoyed Doctor Who, esp. the conversations with the horse. Big surprise, right? We also watched Bill Maher, who I think properly summed up recent events thusly: "Some crazy Christians pretending to be crazy Jews riled up a bunch of crazy Muslims, so Mitt Romney could prove Mormons are even crazier."

Sunday, I was a party host. Can't remember the last time I tried that. But 4 of my gaming friends came over for the 'game', that being Ravens/Eagles, of course. We had an Eagles fan. I seated him near the door and we took turns reminding him we could easily toss him out of it. But he had the last laugh, dammit. But we had a grand time other than the final score, and a couple people stayed after and we played board games until late. I had to let CJ out eventually, but she was nice to the strangers! Total relief, that. The whole thing must have gone well, because the last folks out said we should do this again. My back isn't so sure about that, I'm a hurting pup today (presumably from moving around the furniture) but otherwise, yeah, gamers at the game, why not?

Made It

It's Friday, I got through the week. My neck & back are killing me and I don't know why, but otherwise things weren't too bad. Meanwhile, managed to watch a few movies - 'Full Metal Jacket', I almost didn't recognize D'Onofrio, it was okay but the two halves were too different from each other. Tonight we watched the original 'Exorcist' - I can see where it was edgy in 1973, but now it's fairly ordinary. Time is not always kind to films.

Almost, I decided to pass on making it three straight days of gaming. But I went Friday and Saturday, played a bunch of games, learned two new ones and ate a ton. That being the case, and also today being absolutely beautiful, I took Mom to look at a couple of houses (the one I was interested in was meh, the ones I picked for logistical reasons were fab), we ate frozen yogurt on a patio, and then home to watch football. Except I just couldn't get into the football, so I watched 'Full Metal Jacket' instead. Not entirely the same thing.

No gaming and not a lot of things that interest me this weekend, so it's been a stay home, sleep and putter around the house. I've gotten a few things done and plenty more I'll do tomorrow, mostly bathe Roxie and vacuum the house. I already bathed CJ, did tons of grocery shopping and a lot of computer stuff.

Also working on clearing off the DVR - watching a pile of movies this weekend. We've already watched 16 Blocks (good little film) and The Hurt Locker (good, but a bit overlong) and now we're watching Giant. Talk about overlong, all 3.5 hours of it. Don't know how long I'll last with it, but so far it's just confirmed for me that I would never live in Texas.

And of course there was Doctor Who last night - I wasn't spoiled for it in terms of plot, but my expectations for it were raised by what I did hear and of course then it's not what I thought it would be. Good thing I don't expect the show to make sense, there were some serious plot holes and Huh? things, but enjoyable all the same.

Not spoilery, really, esp if you saw any of the trailers...

Ticket to IMAX: $12.50
Small soda and a pretzel: $10.50 (WTF?)

Seeing Heinz Field blown to bits with Ben Roethlisberger & Hines Ward in it: Priceless.

Which at this point is a noteworthy event. I haven't been in almost two years. And in this particular instance, I went to an IMAX film, which is something I've never done before. I don't think it was worth the extra $4, I didn't really see where the screen was that much bigger than usual, and the sound was way to loud. I had brought earplugs, but they weren't enough most of the time, and when it was just dialogue, the earplugs had to come out so I could understand what was being said. So, no IMAX.

That said, I liked the movie plenty. It was 'The Dark Knight Rises', of course, and I thought it was very good.

People complain that Bane is unintelligible; I couldn't understand half the characters. I'd like to see it again with captioning. I spent half the film trying to ID actors, and was very surprised/pleased to see Burn Gorman in there, I had no idea he was in it, and I've never heard him speak American before. I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt was at least as much the lead as Christian Bale. After seeing the end, I don't think that was a mistake. It struck me that while people have claimed the film is commenting on modern politics, I was thinking they were actually retelling the French Revolution.

Anyway, those were my immediate thoughts.

Trying to watch it. Liked the music and cinematography on the 'origin of life' segment, not sure what to make of the rest so far. Of course the other half is I should go to be early, not staying up...

ETA yeah, I watched the whole thing. The music was wonderful. The childhood segment was more accessible than the beginning and end segments, but reminded me entirely too much of my own father, in particular because of the music and the insistence on listening, NOW, and appreciating it whether you wanted to or not. (Sometimes I think it's amazing I like music at all.) I have no idea what Sean Penn was doing in this film. The ending was just weird. I need to go to bed now.

I had hoped to spend this new-show-free week clearing off the rest of the classic films from the DVR. Power outages and a Firefly marathon (I am not proud, but I am happy) prevented a full DVR cleaning, but I did knock out 3 films this week. Oddly enough, the movie I'd seen a few small bits of here and there was the only one of the three where I didn't see where the plot was going early. Anyway, my thoughts:

The Wicker Man (1973) The original, of course. No time for Nic Cage here. In its time, this movie was shocking and horrific. Now it's merely creepy. Because of its rep, I had an impression of the film being dark and scary. Instead it was filmed almost entirely in daylight in a charming Scottish village.

The increasing oddness of the villagers and ritual sacrifice notwithstanding

, I'd vacation there. And I saw where the film was going early on, so there was no shock for me. But it's very well-done, tightly written and filmed, and Sir Christopher Lee sings.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - I had no idea this was the source of 'We don't need no stinkin' badges!' which of course wasn't exactly was said, either. Once again, the setting is a character in the movie and that's the most successful aspect of it, IMHO. Because again, I saw where they were going with the story pretty early on, and was only surprised by how long it took to get there. It's a morality play.

The Philadelphia Story - This time, while I was pretty sure the wedding wasn't going to happen, I had no idea who was going to wind up with whom, when or how. Yay! And my new favorite line - 'Can you use a typewriter?' 'No thanks, I have one.' Gee, that was a complicated wedding. I think I need a drink now. And yes, definitely a top of the line romantic comedy.

I am totally, completely relieved that the health care law was upheld. I'd pretty well convinced myself it was dead. That's the good thing about pessimism - you get pleasant surprises :)

Meanwhile, the WaPo had a marketing article turn into a discussion about gay Oreos. I mention this because, while the usual arseholes showed up, the other side had a humor field day. I laughed out loud a few times. My favorite line was the guy who said he wouldn't eat a rainbow Oreo, partly because of the sugar coma possibility but mostly because if he dipped it in milk it would "look like Rainbow Brite took a whiz in my drink."

My second favorite line from that conversation also applies to the health care decision. When someone bemoaned the arseholes, another responded "but aren't they just adorable when they get infuriated like that?"

Closer to home, I just watched the original "Wicker Man". Good thing I knew it was Sir Christopher Lee, I don't think I would have recognized him! Except for the seeming inbalance of nubile women and old men, I think I wouldn't mind living on SummerIsle. Then again, this was spring. Winter probably sucks.
gonzai: (Tired)
Except for a couple short errands with Mom and Roxie, both of whom needed out of the house, I'm staying put today. Too stiff from driving/sitting yesterday, plus I've had enough sun for the week. Just playing with the computer and watching movies (Inception is making more sense this time) and probably go to bed as soon as it's dark.
gonzai: (oh really)
Just watched the movie for the first time. Seemed to be comparatively little about Hal and rather all about the league.

But far more importantly: Ryan Reynolds in his undies. Yummy. Very, very yummy.
gonzai: (Wat)
I almost didn't watch this, because I absolutely can't bring myself to care about Hemingway. The only writing of his I ever finished was 'The Old Man & The Sea', almost certainly because it's so short. I didn't get far with anything else. But I watched it anyway since it's Emmy-bait, and I'm glad I did. Because Gellhorn, whom I can't recall having heard of before, was a much more interesting person!

Being as it's the 50th anniversary of the movie and all, USA network is having a special showing of it, Saturday, April 7th (that would be tomorrow) at 8pm EST. The movie will be introduced by a certain person for whom I voted this week. You know the one. Except if we speak his name in connection with TKAM, certain people will promptly hate on the book and movie. But if you're a TKAM fan, you're likely a fan of his anyway.

Knocked out a couple more of them in the last few days. 'Paradise Lost: Purgatory' is the only Oscar nominated film I saw prior to the Oscars - the night before. It's driving legal me batty, because much of the issue with the West Memphis 3 is that they kept filing for new trials and appeals and such - and every request was given to the same judge who presided over the original trial. WTF? The whole idea of appealing is to go to the next highest court! Why the heck is the same guy getting the case repeatedly? The whole thing could have been over 15 years ago if it had simply been reviewed by a different judge, dammit.

Then tonight I watched 'The Loving Story'. They had the opposite situation: The judge in the original case made a ruling so blatantly racist and anti-constitutional, the Lovings' attorneys had no problem filing appeals and taking the case to higher courts because the basis for appeal was so clear. Still, it's ridiculous that they had to go through so much for so long just to stay married in their own hometown. Some days we've clearly moved forwards, as with the Lovings, but other days...owf.

The football game is just not holding my interest. And the commercials have been either mundane or stupid. So pooh on that, switching to 31 Days of Oscar. 'The Lavender Hill Mob', specifically. We've already watched the Puppy Bowl 1.5 times and cleared the tv shows off the DVR, plus took care of a lot of paperwork and computer stuff, experimented with food (tried to cook artichokes for the first time, they turned out decently), did some cleaning, and looked at one house that had a stunning kitchen but way too many stairs, steep ones at that. Yesterday I finally was able to go to gaming again, didn't get to play too much between being tired and a couple games taking way too long to play. But I played a bit and got a few things done so I can't fault the weekend entirely.

Yes, I am finally, for the first time ever, watching 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'. It is a hoot and a half. Is there anything they don't have in that bus?

I worked most of the day yesterday, then went to the gym, picked up a couple things for Christmas, did some housecleaning, wrapped the rest of my gifts and finished putting together my annual 'music you might like' CD for my brother. Each year I pick out 16-20 songs by artists I don't think Mike is familiar with, but I think he'd like. Generally he likes at least half of them. I hope. Somehow I still had time to watch BBC America's 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!' special, (apparently the British aspect was a new panelist from the UK; I don't think Neil Gaiman counts as British, since he's lived in the US for 20 years), and a movie from a few years back, 'Something The Lord Made'. Very interesting film, about Vivien Thomas, a young black man whose college dreams are dashed by the Great Depression, but he happens to get a job working for Dr Albert Blaylock, and becomes Blaylock's right hand man as they pioneered open heart surgery and found a way to cure 'blue baby syndrome'. It also happened to be filmed in Baltimore; there was a lot of 'I know that street' and 'I've seen that house' going on. Good flick.

I am neither watching nor recording Supernatural tonight. See, Mom saw a segment on Martin Sheen the other day (I'm sure I've mentioned that she adores him to pieces) and got it into her head she wants to see 'Apocalypse Now'. I saw that once. I'll be much happier in my life if I never see it again. But she wants to see it. And it's on tonight. All 4.5 hours of it. On the same time as Supernatural and Grimm. Which means that to record the movie for her, one of my shows has to get the boot. Grumble...

(I do have ways of getting Supernatural, it'll just have to wait until tomorrow.)

I rented it on demand Friday night, and watched it both Friday and Saturday. Figured I should get my money's worth. Anyway, perfectly enjoyable film, good entertainment, but to me, not worthy of the apparent obsession it has wrought amongst certain segments of fandom. Sorry.
