It occurred to me that as a Baltimore resident, I probably ought to mention that I'm on the opposite end of town from most of the trouble, and I have no reason to go into the city, so me and mine are safe. Although it was weird to watch 'American Crime' last week, ending as it did with a protest march turned violent, and then have it happen for real in my own town less than 48 hours later.

Speakimg of me and mine, my little 'family' has grown since I was here last. I rescued 3 dumbo rats last summer, unfortunately my favorite, Paige, passed away on Easter. Neither I nor the vet have any idea what was wrong. The other two, Piper & Phoebe, seem to actually be a little happier now, maybe it's more room in the cage. The other addition is in my icon - that's Mosely, who I rescued in February through the rescue I do transports for. He's an absolute love bug, but CJ is still not on board. She's getting better, especially now that I've been walking them together around the neighbor. The truce is uneasy but at least it exists.

Oh yeah - the Daredevil binging? Watched the whole thing twice and a couple eps more than that. Digging through Charlie Cox's filmography next.

Mom managed to both lose her JCPenney card and her bill for something she bought in December. So I had no account number or card to work with, and had to spend an hour on the phone with customer service. We got through most of it...paying the overdue bill and reporting the lost card...except when we were supposed to confirm our address, the rep informed us that there is no 'Baltimore' in the state of Maryland. Yes, really. The week we win the Superbowl, we don't exist. When we finally convinced Baltimore existed, she decided our address must have been 'the name of the city before it was Baltimore'. Um, right.

MY CITY IS REAL, DAMMIT!

...may as well use it, right?

An office building not far from where I work (just off the JFX northbound, city/county line) faces the JFX and is about 70 x 90 feet on that side. In recent years, they figured they had the wall and the audience, might as well use it. Most of the time, starting around Christmas or so, they project a Ravens logo onto the side of the building. When Ray Lewis announced he was retiring, they projected a giant '52' on it. And after Saturday's game...well, now it says, simply,

OMG

I'll bet that's a cool place to work.

Movie Time

Switched to movie mode today, more or less (there was also football involved - much better on fantasy this week, and OUAT - um...what?). It literally took years, but I finally finished watching '2001: A Space Odyssey'. I've tried to watch it before without getting more than a few minutes into section 2. The last several weeks I've been watching 10 minutes here or there. At long last, I finished it today. And boy was it a chore. I didn't get it and I didn't like it (other than the music). But it has been seen.

Meanwhile, believe it or not, this Baltimorean has never seen 'Diner'. Bits here and there, but less than half of it total and never in order. By chance I saw it was on last night (on PBS, of all places) and recorded it. It was thoroughly bleeped, but otherwise legit. Naturally I spent half the movie playing spot the location (the horse farm where Boogie tries to pick up the rider is right by my brother's in-laws place; the Tudor-style building across from the manger is near the office and contains the office's bank.) It was perfectly acceptable as a movie, but not up to the reputation it seems to hold around here. Filming in Baltimore isn't unusual anymore and frankly, 'Diner' is a film for guys. But the music was great, again.

Lessee...

I checked the Emmys a couple times but hit a commercial every time. However, I see the Emmy voters were both astute and Baltimore homers. Astute, because Homeland was the best freakin' thing on TV last season (and there was a lot of great stuff to choose from) but I never expected it to win Best Drama. Best Actor for Damian Lewis? He deserves it, but I'm pleasantly floored by it. Meanwhile, other winners were Julie Bowen (from Baltimore), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (filmed in Baltimore) and Game Change (filmed in Baltimore, I drove through the set at one point.) Very cool.

Also cool, buried by emotion category: the Ravens' Torrey Smith is playing tonight - and has scored two touchdowns - a few hours after the death of his younger brother. Wow. Just one of the crazy things going on this game. And by the way, can we please, please, PLEASE have the real refs back? Gack.

ETA - Holy crap. We won.

Not cool at all...anyone want a dog? I don't know how, but CJ managed to get a hold of a leather art portfolio five feet away from and above her crate. She completed shredded the $200 portfolio, along with a few pieces of original artwork and dozens of copies of art that I had sold. She never got outside the crate, but somehow dragged the portfolio into the crate. I don't know what to do other than to attach wire mesh to the sides and front of the crate, but I don't have any left here and I don't know if Home Depot would have such stuff or if they can cut it to size, as I don't have the equipment to cut heavy wire. Ay-yi-yi.

The rest of the story from last night - one of the guys from Roots Cafe turned 50 this week, and he and his wife decided to have a party. But not just any party - they rented the Baltimore Streetcar Museum. And booked a very loud band. It was a little tricky trying to find the place, I've never been to the Streetcar Museum, or ridden on one for that matter. Bad me, revoking my local cred card. But I did find it and there were about 200 folks there, so it was a serious party. The streetcars were running all night, 4 different cars. I rode Car 1164, which was built in 1902 and was a bit, um, breezy. Open seating. But very nifty and it got some pretty serious speed going at one point. The band was good but crazy loud, especially inside a brick and tile museum, so most of my listening was done out front. Everyone from Roots came, the first time most of us have seen each other in 3 to 5 years, so it was like a reunion. I also met an announcer from a local radio station, and ate a serious variety of olives. 'twas an enjoyable evening.

I couldn't get the photos off my phone, so here's the
Baltimore Streetcar Museum's web site. )

Veep

Just finished watching the second episode of Veep and managed to be so involved with it, I forgot to play 'spot the location'. (The show is filmed in Baltimore, I'm obligated to try to recognize places.) It is an utterly hilarious show, though it is scary to think it has any resemblance at all to the people who run this country. I'd much rather the West Wing gang were running it. But it's more likely these, um, nincompoops.

Anyway, if ridiculously obscene language doesn't bother you, I highly recommend!  (And oh yeah, the movie from the same folks, 'In The Loop' - same deal, if you don't mind infinite f-bombs it's great.)

I worked most of the day yesterday, then went to the gym, picked up a couple things for Christmas, did some housecleaning, wrapped the rest of my gifts and finished putting together my annual 'music you might like' CD for my brother. Each year I pick out 16-20 songs by artists I don't think Mike is familiar with, but I think he'd like. Generally he likes at least half of them. I hope. Somehow I still had time to watch BBC America's 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!' special, (apparently the British aspect was a new panelist from the UK; I don't think Neil Gaiman counts as British, since he's lived in the US for 20 years), and a movie from a few years back, 'Something The Lord Made'. Very interesting film, about Vivien Thomas, a young black man whose college dreams are dashed by the Great Depression, but he happens to get a job working for Dr Albert Blaylock, and becomes Blaylock's right hand man as they pioneered open heart surgery and found a way to cure 'blue baby syndrome'. It also happened to be filmed in Baltimore; there was a lot of 'I know that street' and 'I've seen that house' going on. Good flick.

OK, so we do tend to go a little purple crazy around town this time of year (Go Ravens!) but this is ridiculous:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bal-grape-juice-accident0831,0,1307500.story

Baltimore police said an intersection has been shut down after a tractor-trailer carrying 67,000 pounds of grape juice overturned.

Police closed Ponca Street at Boston Street to lift the trailer. The intersection is in Southeast Baltimore, in an industrial area east of Canton and south of Greektown.
