Newsroom

As my regulars know, I am a West Wing-nut. And I liked Sports Night, The American President, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (although apparently I'm the only one who did.) So I figured I had to watch Newsroom, at least once, even though I can no longer stand Sam Waterston (I hated Jack McCoy) and the reviews have been universally awful. Maybe the awful reviews did the trick. I watched the pilot and sat there thinking, 'it's not West Wing - nothing is - but this is not bad. Not bad at all.' Every complaint I heard about the show was there, but none of them were a fraction as glaring as the reviews would have you think.

Obviously, it's just the pilot, but I'll watch again.

Veep

Just finished watching the second episode of Veep and managed to be so involved with it, I forgot to play 'spot the location'. (The show is filmed in Baltimore, I'm obligated to try to recognize places.) It is an utterly hilarious show, though it is scary to think it has any resemblance at all to the people who run this country. I'd much rather the West Wing gang were running it. But it's more likely these, um, nincompoops.

Anyway, if ridiculously obscene language doesn't bother you, I highly recommend!  (And oh yeah, the movie from the same folks, 'In The Loop' - same deal, if you don't mind infinite f-bombs it's great.)

I love Bradley Whitford. Seriously, truly love him. Still disappointed that every time I showed up at a West Wing filming (4 of them) he wasn't in any of them.

Thus I watched the pilot of 'The Good Guys'. Analysis: should be renamed 'The If-Nothing-Else-Is-On-And-You-Really-Need-Background-Noise Guys. It was weird, but it wasn't funny, and it wasn't entertaining. Not even Bradley. Just very annoying.

Sorry Bradley. I tried. I really did.

Saw [livejournal.com profile] neadods 's post about someone who didn't like female characters, so several people started listing their own. Might as well chime in on that, right? Although I should be going to bed, so I may forget some characters, go short on the comments or completely forget a fandom. Or define fandom really loosely. No particular order, btw.

Buffy. Any woman/girl on Buffy, really, at least among the major characters. They were all interesting, strong, changed as their experiences changed, and never stopped being themselves.

Zoe Washbourne, Firefly: The consummate soldier. And she loves nerds.

Laura Roslin, BSG. Some people rise to their level of incompetence, some people rise to the occasion. Holy hannah, but Roslin rose to the occasion. What would have happened to the survivors without her? Guaranteed, there wouldn't be any.

CJ Cregg, West Wing. I named my dog CJ. Does that give you a clue? 'cause if it doesn't, she'll ram that motherboard up your...never mind.

Doctor Who. Pretty much all the regulars in the current version. Donna is awesome, Martha left on her own terms, etc.

Lily Rush, Cold Case. By all rights, she should be a wreck. Instead, she's a first rate cop.

Mary Shannon, In Plain Sight. She is a wreck. But she's still the best at her job and men live in fear of her :)

Abby Sciuto, NCIS. A true free spirit, but also a warm-hearted genius and the best at what she does.

Ziva David, NCIS. Kicks ass, rarely bothers to take a name.

Fiona, Burn Notice. See Ziva, add explosives.

Sarah Conner, T:SCC. See Ziva & Fiona, add protecting her young.

Patty Hewes, Damages. Could write a book on her...

Angela Montenegro, Bones. Never met a punch she couldn't roll with. Wins title of 'most easy-going without being a doormat'.

Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles, Pushing Daisies. Taking the whole 'dead' thing very well. Taking charge of it, in fact.

Now I must sleep...

For the first time since I can remember, I lost at Monopoly. And not just lost. My brother just whipped the tar out of me. He traded me for New York Ave, put a hotel on it and then I managed to hit it 3 straight times. Game over. They're continuing the game without me now. Mind, this is the 'Star Wars - Clone Wars' version of Monopoly I gave Jack for Christmas. I would rather have played the Beatles Monopoly I gave Mike, but little boys rule on Christmas.

BTW, my Christmas haul included:
Seasons 3-7 of the West Wing, completing my collection
Season 4 of Lost
The Dark Knight
The Torchwood Archives book
a Torchwood calendar
The John Howe Workshop book
a black and purple winter hat (Ravens!)
the complete Tom Lehrer collection
and Good Old War's new CD.

Mmmm, fandom. Lots of fandom for me.
