As in, second in Ticket to Ride (lost by 4 points), second in Stone Age (lost by 2 points), second in Settlers of Cataan, two seconds in Can't Stop and a second in a new game, Isla Dorada. I seem to have had a wee bit of a pattern today. Losing TTR stung, but the others were plusses. Also learned 3 4 new games (bought one; entered a drawing for one; would like to never see the 3rd and 4th ones again) and picked up a couple more games along the way. It's hard trying to get wild card games going though, everyone's in a tournament and you have to try to catch everyone at exactly the right time (yes, I'm also an offender.) Generally, though, having a good time :)
Euroquest, Day One
Nov. 4th, 2010 11:40 pmJust got home from Day 1 of Euroquest. Won an in-person Stone Age game for the first time, won plenty of other games early when they didn't count, but got creamed as the night went on so I passed on the Dominion tournament. Somehow was placed on a team with two people I barely know, but we finished the night in first place with two wins and a second. We'll see how we do as time goes on.
Oh, continued 'Ornament Quest' before going to the tourney and found the jackpot - found a store with gazillions of the ornaments in stock. Bought as many as I could get in the shopping cart. I should be good for the rest of the year. Phew.

More Little Things
Oct. 20th, 2010 12:08 pmGarlic - it gets into everything. Clothes, trash can, the fridge, drinks...how can something that healthy be so danged pervasive?
Southern Pecan coffee creamer does not quite work with Mudslide coffee.
When the postman brings a small amount of mail for the day, I don't think it's a light day. I think, 'Oh swell, who did he give all of our mail to?' And I'm right about 80% of time.
( Ingenious ) is infuriating. And absurdly addicting. It should have been called Can't Stop, except that name is already taken.

Very tired and sore this morning. Surprise. Managed to make it down to Soup for a while, ran the table at Ticket to Ride, lost Qwirkle & Settlers, and then left early due to too woozy to keep thinking. But mostly just worked on clearing out the rest of the car (only the microwave is left) and catching up on papers and such. Also pricing some items I brought back, collectibles are easier to sell in a big city than the middle of nowhere so I have been assigned that duty. Premium clock oil, a WWII vintage bayonet and two Meerschaum pipes. Let the hunt begin...
Lesson learned for the day: check the cell phone for messages before I go anywhere. Went to drop off the commision portrait I just finished, and discovered after waiting at the meet point for a while that the buyer had left a message that she couldn't make it. Oops. Besides that, I also went to the gym and the pharmacy, took Mom food shopping and had my car's front brakes replaced. Then took Mom out for her birthday dinner at the Woodfire Grill - she loves their salads, and she loves lamb anytime, and they have that too. And the blueberry coconut cake was awesome. Swung by Barnes & Noble to search their clearance bin for games, they have some good ones at 75% off IF you can find them. I found Qwirkle Cubes for $6.25. Score! Now home for the winddown.
Home for the Night
Jul. 10th, 2010 11:03 pmNo con-party for Gonzai. I worked eight straight hours in the art show, leaving the room only to use the facilities. Didn't even have proper food for dinner. So when I called it a day, I meant it. No parties, and no game room. Although the game room has been dead all weekend, few gamers and even fewer games. There's a library of maybe a dozen there.
jslinder brought Dominion and we may play a couple games tomorrow, but that will probably be about it for gaming. The art show is more or less done now, artist pickup in the morning is it and several artists picked up today, including me. I agented for Theresa Mather and Charlene Taylor D'Alessio; I bring home one D'Alessio print and that's it. Sold everything else. Didn't sell a lot of my own, but my print of Abby Sciuto became my first ever auction item at Shore Leave. Started at the min bid of $15, wound up selling for $55. So pleased about that, although my overall sales were way down. (I brought no 3D art and less 2D than usual, so that didn't surprise me greatly.)
The funeral was very well attended, which rather surprised me as Rick had been very reclusive the last several years. (Reclusive as in, even his brothers didn't know where he lived.) I did get the impression most folks there either knew him many years ago, or were friends of Donny, the brother who organized the service. We met Rick's son Aaron and Donny's son Joe for the first time in over 30 years. But Donny was the only person there we actually knew, so we didn't stay too long.
One more day of con...but this time, I'm unobligated. Panel, games and autograph time!

Winding Down
Jul. 3rd, 2010 09:00 pmFinishing a long day of gaming, both watching and playing.
Watched the World Cup for the first time this morning, seeing most of the Germany/Argentina white-washing. Most of the game was simply wondering if Argentina would show up at all...they didn't. Bummed about Muller getting the boot for the next game though, 'cause he's kinda gorgeous. If all soccer players looked like that I'd be watching fulltime...but I digress. Also tried, once again, to teach Mom to play Ticket to Ride online. Failed again, too, and lost every game in the process.
Then to the final GCOM session in Hillendale. The hosts have determined their house is just too small and hectic to continue as hosts, so this was the last gaming session there. Learned a few new games, including 'Aquaretto', which was notable because I learned the expansion game when I've never played the original. Then to more the usual games, including more Ticket, which I won.
And now home once more.

Tried To Game, At Least
Jun. 5th, 2010 08:21 pmThe gaming was back in my neighborhood today, so Dave and I both gave it out best shot despite both of us having colds and not much sleep. We didn't do too well. Dave won the the grand debut of my new Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries and after that we descended rapidly. Tried a game called '3 Commandments' which was awful (Jamie doesn't think it was worth the $1 she paid for it), got our backsides handed to us at the kids' version of 'Wits & Wagers', then Dave played (and lost) to a six year old at a couple games and I was badly beaten at ''Esalund' or whatever that was called. We decided to call it a night early. Ah well. We got out of the house for a while.
Balticon Is Over
May. 31st, 2010 06:34 pmDidn't bring the netbook with me yesterday or today, so the posting had to wait til now. Stopped in the video room for a bit and saw the back half of 'Up', loved the dog bits. The art show ended with me not receiving a single bid on any piece in the show. Usually I sell 4-6 pieces. Not good. Then I was returning the art from the auction and managed to fall down the escalator. No damage done to the art, but I'm all bruises and pulled muscles today. Didn't get out of the show until nearly 6:30, but it turned out my timing was good. I hoped to find someone to have dinner with, and found 11 of them. More specifically, found most of the Alphabet Soup gang just coming into dinner. The hotel's dinner buffet was great, awesome red potatoes, I ate quite well and surprisingly healthy. And it will be hard to top that crew for a fun dinner crowd. Only got into 1 game before Social Class started, but played TTR with the world's most precocious kid, AJ. Nonstop entertainment there. Finally caught up, however briefly, with
terri_osborne ,
suricattus and
tiggerallyn . Went back today strictly for gaming, wound up playing only two games, but helping to pack up the room. I can't NOT volunteer, can I? Anyhoo, home now. Probably going to be VERY early.

Yeah, I'm Awake
May. 2nd, 2010 11:16 amBarely. Three nights of not sleeping well, CJ woke me at 6:30 yesterday and 6:15 today...bleah. The little guys are over right now, but thoroughly entranced in the Wallace & Gromit DVD I gave them as a joint birthday present. Good thing, they don't seem to like their individual presents. Or the games I had to play, or the food Grammy made them, or the dogs...just generally cantankerous this morning. And their parents are late. Should have been here half an hour ago. Yay.
Yesterday was a game day in the neighborhood - Dave & I managed to beat the food, drinks, one host and most of the players. Whoops. Got in plenty though - Transamerica, Winner's Circle (I won, despite scoring negatively in round one and barely in round 2), Ticket to Ride USA (won again), Ticket - Switzerland (finally, I can read the board!), and we learned High Society and Underground (Dave won those.) Also watched the Derby - talk about slop. Glad I didn't have to step in that. Yuck. My pick, the filly of course, showed.
I think the parents are here.

Last Night Was A Tad Odd
Apr. 28th, 2010 11:00 amIt started with my dentist appointment being cancelled - for the third time, none by me. Snow, the dentist's father died, and now the dentist has pinkeye. And because I get evening appointments, it's a month before I can reschedule each time. My early February appointment is now Memorial Day weekend.
Then, because I was home after all, Mom wanted to go shopping. This is very out of character for both of us, shopping on a weeknight. But off to Home Depot we went. And she didn't bring her shopping list *head desk*. Then we discovered just what Bill Maher meant when he said finding true love is like finding a Home Depot employee - if you're really lucky, you'll find it once or twice in your life. There was one employee manning six departments and 11 people waiting for him. An hour later...
Now I really wanted to sit down with NCIS and play Settlers online. And once again - crazy, obnoxious people playing Settlers. I wound up staying up later than planned just because I finally found two normal people to play against, after suffering through more rude jerks.
Now I'm sleepy from staying up. But at least work is quiet...

Another Day Down
Apr. 25th, 2010 06:04 pmStopped back at Game Days to pick up a couple games from the dealers and babysat Mom on a trip through Home Depot, but otherwise spent the whole day at the dog show. Got a massage while I was there, really needed that, plus picked up a new toy CJ is quite enamored of and some smoked deer bones to keep both dogs occupied when the general contractor comes back. Also was well slimed by a few pups and used as support prop by others. Good to be needed! The photos are being a bit obstreperous but I hope to be able to post a few pics tonight or tomorrow night.
Back from Game Days
Apr. 24th, 2010 09:18 pmAfter a hellish time trying to get out of the house (which included smashing my head into a kitchen cabinet), I managed to go to the wrong hotel. Then I discovered, after I was there, that there were no concessions at said hotel. You bring you own (which I hadn't) or go to Chili's. Not a big Chili's fan. But at least I got a big, caffeine laden soda out of it.
Also failed to play much, with most folks opting for the 3+ hour mega games and/or preoccupied with the silent auction. I had a list of things I wanted to bid on; 2 didn't make it to the auction, and all but one of the others were also targeted by BSFS, so I didn't want to bid against them. Since I play their game sets at Alphabet Soup, it is to an extent bidding against myself. And I was sniped on the one non-Hal Haag game, a Star Wars game I thought the nephews would love. Final tally? Qwirkle. That was it. Did snag some GCOM swag, pretty purple dice and assorted accessories, and I'm picking up the original Settlers of Cataan tomorrow, but in the end I didn't spend nearly what I expected and my hands are much emptier than I thought.
Did at least get to wrap up the evening by finally playing some games I like (Ticket to Ride & Stone Age) with people I knew. I think that one day of Game Days may well be plenty for me, but we'll see how I feel next year.

Random Thoughts
Apr. 23rd, 2010 10:25 amNow that the house is semi-normal, a collection of thoughts from the past week, none of which really warrant a full post at this point:
Remaking Death At a Funeral. Very mixed feelings on this. First rate cast and it can't not be funny with that cast, but there was nothing wrong with the original film. The original was made of awesome.
Fox changed its mind about an American Torchwood, fortunately. What the heck is the problem with Americans that everything must be dumbed-down and given a hefty helping of bland before they'll consider watching it? The original is the thing, people.
Speaking of dumbed down, I'm thinking I must *cough* this week's South Park, even though I never watch it anymore, just to honk off the radical Muslims, the censors and Viacom.
This week's Justified: way funnier than the previous eps. I love, love, love Raylan's boss. And what I line: "Would you like to see my art collection?" "I'd rather shove my dick in a blender."
Good lines: from Mose Allison's 'My Brain': "My brain is getting pounded/pretty soon it's going to be confounded." That will be me at Games Day tomorrow. My brain has been pounded, tomorrow it will be confounded.
The YMCA still hasn't sent me a refund for the payment they erroneously took out of my account. And my primary physician will not return my calls. And Jeff's birthday is Monday, but his birthday present still hasn't been delivered. Oh, the small annoyances that make the big ones (the house & Mom) that much more aggravating.

Still Slogging Through
Apr. 22nd, 2010 10:21 amI managed to dig through everything far enough to get to the home computer and watch 'Lost' on it. I don't like watching TV on my computer. And half the time it doesn't work anyway (took a couple programs to find one that would play Lost for me, VLC did the job.) But without anything to sit on and no fridge/stove/tv/etc, there's not much to do but play games online and go to bed.
BTW, is it just me, or does Settlers of Cataan have a disproportionate number of crazy online players? I rarely run into problems online beyond the occasional quitter, but when I play Settlers on Brettspielwelt, I wonder if there's a full moon. Half the players are crazy, rude or both. But only that game. What gives?

Home From Chilly-Ball
Apr. 10th, 2010 09:38 pmI exaggerate a bit - I left the Baysox game at 8:30 and while it was getting colder, it wasn't miserable yet. I'm told last night was not only cold, but the wind was blowing a lot. Thursday's game was suspended due to downpours. So tonight wasn't so bad. But my feet and back were killing me and I was dozing off with an hour drive ahead of me, so I boogied in the sixth inning with the score tied 2-2. This year's Baysox include two guys with the last name of Britton (not related), two guys named Figueroa (as related as you can get - identical twins) and three pitchers named Zack. Name game time...and I'm feeling very old again. Two players on the team were born after I was already in college and I'm older than the pitching coach. I must be a geezer.
Also stopped by the last Hollywood Video in Maryland, which is going out of business. They weren't in full sale mode yet but I picked up a couple things in the $4-5 range, including a couple Alan Tudyk flicks I didn't have and the timeless 'To Kill A Mockingbird'. And a stop by a game shop, they didn't have the accessories I hoped for but I did snag a copy of Ubongo. And now I'm home and nearly asleep, so off I go.

Errand Day, #2
Mar. 22nd, 2010 05:47 pmWhew. After managing to squeeze both a memorial service and a gaming session into yesterday afternoon, today was another errand marathon. I was late to the doctor's appointment due to Balmorons getting extra stupid when it rains, but as it turned out several people cancelled so I was able to go straight in. Next appointment was on the same hospital campus, and I didn't feel like trying to move the car so I walked there. This test required me to not eat OR drink, anything, at all, so naturally the appointment was at 10:30. But the 9:30 & 10 both no-showed, so they took me straight in. I was out again by 10, and beelining to a 7-11 caffeine & food. Home for a bit, then took Mom to the bank to have me added to her account. The good: turns out with her present account, she was entitled to a free safe deposit box. So we signed her up. The bad: Friday, Mike and I were in agreement about me being added to the account. Naturally, when I called him, he suddenly didn't agree with me about anything. I was added to the account but Mike is talking like he wants to take me right back off and put himself on instead. Between him rarely being in town and we pretty much only hear from him when he wants free babysitting, I'm rather galled he wants to take over looking after Mom and is trying to keep me out of it. Gack. So this is going to get ugly sooner rather than later. Dammit. Then we went to Home Depot and bought a new sink for the bathroom, and had that loaded into the van despite it being the pouring rain. Who knows how long that will sit in the van. Then CJ went to the vet for shots, tests, and as a result of
neadods and her kitty, I had her microchipped. The vaccines were half price, and it still came to over $200. Yikes. She was mostly well-behaved, but she slipped her collar in the parking lot, which gave me a coronary. So now I'm home and trying to settle back in. Not following TV stuff very well at the moment.
