The Dr Who lovefest continues over at the Daily Dish, with today's contributions including...a Tardis wedding cake. Awesome.

Just arrived home from Alphabet Soup. Left a bit early, because we couldn't get the games coordinated quite right - it was the same 5 people over and over, and the games that allowed for 5 players were all games at least one person wouldn't play. So we gave it up a bit early. Learned two new games all the same. Last night at the Balticon picnic I learned two more new games, but had a greater variety of people to play with and talk to and generally hang with, plus several of us watched the Dr Who finale together. (A couple of us were on schedule, a couple were a couple episodes behind but willing to watch anyway, and several hadn't watched Who in a year or more so it didn't matter to them. At least 2 of the latter group hadn't watched since the 70s and were quite pleased with what they saw last night!)

In the end I made the seafood salad shells, which went over very well with the people who were willing to eat them. Ran into a gauntlet of vegans/vegetarians, wheat/seafood allergy sufferers and observant Jews. But the whole tray did disappear, and they were even more popular at Soup, where the gauntlet was much shorter (one vegetarian, I think.)

Now home, stiff and sore, to finish the paper and perhaps watch a show or two Mom doesn't like before she gets back from a birthday party.

My original plan for today was the Baysox game. But it's 95 & humid, so that's right out.

Next option was gaming across town. But I woke up today exhausted, with a migraine and a very sore back/neck, and just sitting in the car hurt like hell. No gaming.

Oh well. I did manage to get some busy work done on the computer and play some games there, and catch up on shows. Is there another Doctor Who ep on Saturday? I thought yesterday's was the season ender, but the references to June 26 make me think there's one more. I was pretty close on my guess as to what was in the Pandorica Box. Right contents, wrong timing. Like the new guy on Burn Notice, Jesse - he's Hawt. Now halfway through 'There Will Be Blood', never seen it and not really my kind of flick, but considering how well thought of it is, figured I ought to see it at least once. A bit bored so far.

Spent the weekend juggling family stuff (mom and brother's crew) in the hopes I could do at least a little of my own thing. Managed to game a little (and won a couple games for a change) but mostly stuck.

Time for the Doctor, though...

Luther is a new British crime drama that premiered last week, starring Idris Elba (The Office; The Wire) as a time bomb of a detective. Short version: if you like Wallander, you'll like Luther. If you haven't seen Wallander, think Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Goren episodes - except no Eames around to keep a leash on him. Really dark stuff and they almost lost me with one element of the first episode's crime (animal lovers bewarned), but Elba is awesome (playing about 10 years older than he is) and they're definitely taking this in an unusual direction. For Whoniversers, the cast includes Indira Varma (Torchwood) and Paul McGann (Eight). Check it out.

CJ woke me at 6am, again. Grr. Finished building the new media shelf and moved all of the DVDs onto it. Then tried, for an hour, to teach Mom how to use the DVD player. I've been trying to teach her for over a year now. You'd think I'd learn. I gave her Tenspeed & Brown Shoe for Mother's Day and she really wanted to watch it, so I tried again.

Then went to Alphabet Soup with Dave, where I went 11 for 12 on names. For me, that's really good. Game-wise, lost at everything. And except for Settlers, lost badly. The only new game I got to play was Rumis, not exactly a hard learn, but played Underground again and have a good grasp of it now. Went back home to find Mom managed to bollux not only the TV/DVD, but also the computer. Took half an hour to get the computer back to snuff, although the TV was an easy fix. Watched Who and SNL w/ Betty White (another item for Mom) before passing out.

So [livejournal.com profile] tiggerallyn  has been pondering the lack of ducks in the duck pond ) and came up with the very workable theory that there's a perception filter (ala Torchwood lift) on the pond. I had a different theory about the duck pond, but it doesn't contradict his idea and actually benefits from it.

Leadworth's duck pond has been there for ages and has always had ducks. As long as the residents have been alive, there's been ducks on the pond. My thought was that they are all so used to the ducks on the pond that they can't think of it otherwise, esp. if the ducks only recently disappeared. (Or, as TA has postulated, there's now a perception filter on the pond so the residents can't tell the difference.) My thought is that the ducks, being animals, had a sense of something bad approaching and left the pond to escape it. As the other animals in the town are still there, the bad thing must be using the pond as a point of entry or a residence, hence the ducks want out of there but the other animals aren't as afraid.

Thus, the Doctor needs to find out for certain 1) Why the ducks left, 2) When they left (so as to pinpoint the time of arrival of the bad thing, and 3) what exactly frightened away the duck and set up shop in the pond.

We shall see...

Except that we kept getting phone calls during the show, and every call ran so long the DVD player shut off, so I had to go through and find where it left off again. Pretty disjointed way to watch the show. May have to do it again to get a proper read. Right now, I like Matt Smith but not as much as Tennant; definitely like Amy Pond. Good start, at the very least.

Just An FYI

I am trying to stay away from the internet until I watch the new Doctor Who. Which should happen sometime tomorrow, so we're not talking longterm here, but I have managed to stay completely unspoiled (all I know is there's a new Doctor with a new companion) and I hope to stay that way.

Until tomorrow eve...

Specifically: confirmation that In Plain Sight returns March 31, and the start dates (in the UK) for Doctor Who and Ashes to Ashes. 'cause I just don't have enough to watch *eye roll*

Home from Farpoint, and kind of wishing I hadn't left the con. I'll get back to that.

The gist of things )

Is rather light. Not a whole lot of panels I'm interested in, and a whopping one on Saturday (Dr Who), which is of course scheduled against autographs. And for the 4th year in a row, Supernatural is against autographs & the art auction/artist pickup. What's with that? But this year I was looking at least as much towards socializing and gaming so in that respect the light panel schedule isn't so bad. And the Dominion tournament is in the morning, so I have a fighting chance at it assuming I'm less hung over that other participants! As long as the roads are cleaned up enough for [livejournal.com profile] terri_osborne and I to get there Friday, should be a good weekend with friends.

The original game plan for the weekend was a dog show Saturday and/or the World of Pets today. The snow scotched that. I'm glad I didn't go out yesterday, as apparently the driving was lousy and the other drivers worse. I considered today, but by the time I finished shovelling the driveway, my back & shoulders were killing me. We will not go into how tight and painful they are right now, but it's bad.

So instead I spent the weekend camped in front of the TV and/or computer. Watched all TV shows, and am fully caught up in that regard. Watched everything remaining on the DVR. Saw 4 episodes of 'Men of a Certain Age' - had to let Mom have the telly at some point. Also watched 'Iron Man', 'Aliens', 'Disturbia' and on '1408' now. Played a LOT of Ticket To Ride, mostly without success. But I did finish my drawing of Amy Pond, did Dr Horrible in his entirety, did half of Abby Sciuto, put away a lot of stuff and finally found my dog show tote, which has been missing since October. So not a total loss of a weekend, but I do miss my furry pals.

My shoulders are absolutely killing me. It hurts just to sit, but any kind of movement - like the kind I have to do to take apart documents or scan them - is just excruciating. And I have 4.5 hours to go before I get to try to drive with said shoulders. Ow. And my hands aren't much better. Ow.

Almost done my next drawing, of new Who companion Amy. Just needs a fresh look today in case there's something I missed. Probably should look at it on the computer, often things look completely different on the screen than live. I was going to do Abby from NCIS next, but, considering the guests at Farpoint, now I'm thinking Dr Horrible instead and Abby if I have time.

I am increasingly of a mind to go to the World of Pets Sunday instead of the dog show Saturday. More expensive and absurdly large show, but closer to home and critters of all stripes, not just dogs. But the art needs to progress first.

The biggest hazard for getting things done this weekend? Yup. Ticket to Ride. Played many, many games. Did not win many, but was second several times. Obsess obsess obsess...

I liked it. Apparently, I am alone in this. Was it perfect? No. But I liked it, and I won't change my mind because of all the naysayers.

I totally forgot that pt 2 of Dr Who was today. (Then again, I'm not entirely clear at the moment what day today is. And I didn't drink last night.)

Meanwhile, I see we (the collective Who fans of the universe) are busy breaking the internet. We're an industrious bunch.

Last night I was attempting to teach my mother how to order Video on Demand from FiOS. I know, hopeless. But here's the thing: I discovered by accident that the Dr Who Christmas ep, 'End of Time', is available on demand, for free no less. I'm pleasantly shocked. So if you have FiOS and haven't seen part one yet, repair at once to Demand, the BBCA section.
