If you haven't seen the first 3 eps of Dexter Season 6, run, run away! Quickly!

OK, for starters:

Managed to get caught up on the DVR recordings, but not on downloads. Lots'o'British shows to go. Didn't study for tomorrow's final quite the way I should have, but my notes are in order and my take home work is finished. It's an open final (for some odd reason) so I'm not sure really need to do anything past organizing the notes. Went gaming Friday and this afternoon, and won a game Friday (Mom also won one.) Went 20 for 20 on my college football pick 'em ballot but doing lousy on the pros. And...that's about it. I have GOT to do laundry and vacuuming and Mom's bills. Maybe post test. No homework this week and no gaming this weekend, so maybe I really will get the everyday stuff caught up.

Now off to enjoy the last day of reading the Sun online. Bastards decided that, effective tomorrow, you have to pay to read the paper online. Even if you're a print subscriber (which I have been for 40 years) you have to buy a whole new subscription if you want to look at the website. I think they'll be getting a very rude surprise tomorrow when no one looks at the site again.

Mild spoilers following:

The Good Wife - Alicia and Will have that entire office hornswoggled. Smart people.

Boardwalk Empire - granted I just watched season 1 a couple weeks ago, but it seems to have moved seamlessly into Season 2. And Chalky is one cold fellow. I suspect his wife and/or son are doomed.

Hawaii 5-0 - Damn Alex O'Loughlin is hot. I can form no other coherent thoughts.

Castle - that was awfully complicated...

Alphas - my my my. Rosen certainly did turn this thing on its ear.

Dexter's premiere ep. Already seen it. (Don't ask). It may be the funniest episode of Dexter's entire run. Just sayin'.

And I still have 5 more shows parked on the DVR. Good thing I'm off tomorrow. Next week, I'm screwed.

Definitely, no gaming tomorrow. Not after another 8 hours of it today. Although I played rather well last night and today, with a rare win in Stone Age and a lot of high finishes. Tomorrow will be football and catching up on television before I start the classes Monday and put myself behind the time-eight ball.

Wow. We lose two of the alltime great songwriters within 24 hours. Nickolas Ashford ) was of course half of Ashford & Simpson, and besides their own songs, he and his wife were responsible for most of those awesome Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duets in the late sixties. 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', etc. Fabulous songs. The songs they did themselves were good ones too. Sad.

Jerry Lieber ) was the lyrical half of Lieber & Stoller. Those guys teamed up with the Coasters for so many good songs and so much fun. 'Yakety Yak', don't talk back now. Another great.

Both Ashford and Lieber were recently profiled on CBS Sunday Morning, so any songwriters that have been on recently, please be careful!

Got it sorted late last night. The weather was the original cause - the lightning strike shorted out the cable to the settop box - but it turned out fixing it/resetting it required disconnecting the cable and reconnecting it. So, now we have telly. And I'm finally watching Boardwalk Empire.

Normalcy, mostly.
gonzai: (say what?)
Because I have no CBS Sunday Morning (still no television), we have no over the air TV either (appears Mom trashed the $50 converter box I bought for the kitchen TV) and we have no newspaper. The Sun, in its infinite wisdom, chucked our paper directly into the street gutter. The same gutter that was nearly a foot deep with rushing water due to overnight thunderstorms. Not on the driveway where it's usually thrown, and might get a little wet but still recoverable; no, they tossed it into the gutter.

I am not amused with any of these people.
gonzai: (say what?)
Took quite a few tries on my part online, but finally Verizon has 'fessed up that yes, there is a weather related outage in my area. They say they'll have it fixed sometime overnight tonight. I'm not holding my breath.

We're fine for watching telly anyway, plenty of DVDs and downloads to watch, but no live television. That will be a small problem tomorrow (start my Sunday without CBS Sunday Morning? Nooo!) and a big one Monday, since Mom doesn't undertand how to work the DVD players. Yes, I've taught her to work them, dozens of times, and made little guidebooks for her, all of which she's lost. But in any event, if there's no TV Monday, she'll be at a loss.

The rock 'em sock 'em thunderstorms continued today and this time, we lost power. It was out for two hours, during which we discovered that candles really don't produce a lot of light, it's hard to eat crabs in the dark, and electricity is essential for just about everything. The power came back just as it was getting too dark to do anything at all, and thankfully everything in the fridge & freezer should be OK. The annoying thing is that while the telephone and internet service are both back, the television isn't. (All three are FiOS.) The settop box doesn't seem to be functioning, despite much fiddling and experimenting. So no Ravens/Chiefs, and no FiOS Movie Night. We thought choosing between 'The King's Speech' and 'True Grit' was going to be tough. Instead we get neither. Blast. Hope it's working tomorrow, but what with the strike and all, if the box is fried we will be sans cable/DVR indefinitely. Nuts.
gonzai: (Seriously?)
Yah. Watched Torchwood, then mainlined Mildred Pierce (have about an hour left, have to finish it tomorrow.) I am surrounded (onscreen) by stupid people. Really stupid people. Mildred lets that little beyotch Vita walk all over her, and don't get me started on Rex & Esther. If that's the best the CIA can come up with...

My personal favorite is HGTV...

Back in their respective heydays, I was a big fan of Scorpius (Farscape) and Luther Mahoney (Homicide: Life on the Streets). In both cases you had a villain who was amoral and determined to bring down our heroes; but then they'd turn around and help, or do something good for someone else. They did the right thing just enough to make you wonder what they'd do next. More recently, I think Ben Linus (Lost) falls into this category.

For pure sociopathic delight, Alice (Luther) is tops these days.

SyFy is pulling the plug on Eureka, effective the conclusion of Season Five. (Four is airing now; yeah, it's confusing.)

Nuts.

ETA - From tv.com, I can so see this happening:

As I have HBO free for the time being, I’ve been indulging in their documentary offerings. And there’s a lot of them. I’ve watched most of this summer’s offerings and a few that have been rerun from last year/earlier this year, and I’ll take a swing at short-reviewing them. They are behind a cut, not because of spoilers (this is non-fiction; either we already know the end, or it isn’t over) but for length.

To infinity and beyond! )

gonzai: (Checking In)
I want to post a nice, long detailed post about all the movies and documentaries I've watched in the last couple weeks.

However, typing this much? Hurts. A lot. As does my neck and shoulder. Gah.
gonzai: (say what?)
Last night I watched the season finales of Treme and Luther. And both of them felt like series finales, not season enders. I hope I'm wrong about that, but I have seen/heard nada on either show.

Spoilers, as you might imagine )

And still a show short of being caught up, much less getting started on the movies occupying the DVR.

Quick reactions, with spoilers to include a whopper of a spoiler for Game of Thrones )
gonzai: (McGeek)
Not a whole lot of spoilers, but just in case.

Thoughts on Dr Who, The Killing, Game of Thrones )

Finally watching the HBO movie of the same name. What does it say about a movie that the first non-scripted word in the film is 'motherfucker'?

Meanwhile, just minutes in, it's clear they're making Lehman Bros CEO Dick Fuld the bad guy...not to mention the delusional nutjob. Wonder if he still will be at the end.
